President Muhammadu Buhari has directed security agencies to find the killers of Nigeria’s 15th Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd), and bring them to face the full force of the law.

The president, in a statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, described the killing of the former defence chief as “very sad and unfortunate.”

He pledged that his government would work to ensure greater security and safety for all users of the country’s roads.

Noting that the late Badeh, who was also a former chief of air staff (CAS), attained professional fulfillment in his over three decades’ military career, President Buhari lamented that he fell victim to the incidence of violent and fatal attacks on the nation’s highways.

The president commiserated with the family of the late four-star general, his friends and professional colleagues in the military and the people and government of Adamawa State.

The president prayed God Almighty to comfort all those who mourn Badeh and grant his soul peaceful rest.

Badeh was shot dead on Tuesday night on the Abuja-Keffi highway while reportedly returning from his farm. He was killed alongside his driver.

…Badeh’s Killing Totally Unacceptable

– CAS

Reacting to the killing of the late Badeh, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, described the incidence as totally unacceptable, vowing that that killers of the former defence chief will be made to face justice.

Abubakar made this comment at the opening ceremony of the fourth quarter Chief of Air Staff Conference at NAF Headquarters, Abuja, yesterday.

He said that NAF had been working to unravel the perpetrators of the heinous crime in order to make them to face the full wrath of the laws of the country.

The CAS added that the killing should be a reminder to security operatives to double their efforts to ensure that criminals are not allowed to endanger the lives of Nigerians.

He admitted that there had been a gap in the security system of the nation which NAF under his leadership was trying to bridge.

He expressed the service’s appreciation to Nigerians for their support following the incident, saying such sentiment expressed by Nigerians was a sign of love and support for the service.

The CAS expressed shock over the gruesome act and condoled with members of Badeh’s family for their loss.

“The entire Air Force family is shocked about the incident and we are expressing our condolence to the wife and children of Air Marshal Alex Badeh

“For this kind of thing to happen, it is something that is totally unacceptable.

“The NAF is working very closely, since yesterday, to find the killers of this heinous crime and by the special grace of God, we will get them and they will face justice,” he said

He added that the incident was a reminder to all those who have shouldered the responsibility of protecting the life and property of all Nigerians that though they are working hard, they should redouble their efforts.

“We need to work round the clock; we need to put in more efforts; we need to collaborate more closely to ensure that these criminals are not allowed to endanger the lives of our people,” he said

He further stated that the NAF, in a bid to add value to its operations across the country, had been building the capacity of special forces and regiment personnel.

The air chief reiterated that as part of efforts to bridge the gap, NAF recently recruited over 700 regiment personnel who were trained in Kaduna, adding that another batch is to commence training.

“The idea is to make sure that we bridge the gap that there is in our system in order to be able to deal with these kinds of challenges,” he said, adding, however, that security is everybody’s business and therefore every Nigerian must play a role to ensure that Nigeria is safe and secure.

“Security is everybody’s business; it is not entirely a military affair. Those guys that shot him came from an environment, so we all have to work together to make sure that our national security is not undermined by any group or individuals.”

Abubakar further commended the president, the federal government and the National Assembly for the resources they had provided for NAF to ensure that they reduce security challenges in the country, even as he revealed that the NAF had just taken delivery of NAF 476 from the U.S. for air operations.

“From an average statistics of 36 percent operable aircraft in 2015, today we have 70 -80 percent aircraft in the space. We are not there yet but I can assure you and all Nigerians that we are working round the clock to ensure that Nigeria is secured and its sovereignty is not under threat,” he said
