BRT drivers strike over ‘unpaid salary’

BRT drivers on strike over ‘unpaid salary’

by Adeyinka Aderibigbe

Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) vehicle drivers yesterday embarked on strike over alleged non-payment of their December salary and poor working condition.

But the BRT sole operator, Primero Transport Services Ltd (PTSL), denied owing them salary, describing their action as politically motivated.

The drivers locked the gates of PTSL headquarters at Majidun, Ikorodu, Lagos and prevented other workers from entering.

They alleged that they were being owed December salary and bonuses.

One of them, who preferred anonymity, alleged that they were owed November and December salaries and bonuses, but the company “hurriedly paid November salary on Christmas Eve.”

Many commuters were stranded at bus stops because of the strike. Those who could not afford the high fares charged by other bus operators, trekked.

The yellow bus drivers increased fares by between 50 and 70 per cent. Ikorodu to Oshodi, which used to cost N200, shot up to N300. Fare for Ikorodu to CMS went up from N300 to N500.

The drivers said they would not call off the strike until their salaries were paid.

“We too have families. It is sad that the management is not bothered if our families have a bleak New Year. Let them pay us and we will return to work,” one of them said.

He alleged that two years ago, “we protested poor salaries and wages.”

PTSL’s Managing Director Fola Tinubu said no worker was being owed as at yesterday.

He said on the phone: “What they were initially owed was their November bonus, which was due on December 15 and their December salary. We paid both today, being the last day of the month. We learnt that they are now demanding the payment of December bonus, which is not due until January 15. We have explained to them that the bonus will be paid in January when it will be due.”

He said bonus was the company’s prerogative, adding that it was paid only to drivers who met certain standards every month in order to motivate them.

Don’t see children with challenges as curse, NGO proprietor charges parents

PARENTS OF VULNERABLE CHILDREN SHOULD SEEK HELP QUICKLY –

Parents of vulnerable children should seek help urgently, Aisha Dania Ogieriakhi, NGO Proprietor

Some beneficiaries of the initiative in Ibadan

The parents of weak and challenged children have been encouraged to reach out and access help when the children are still young and trainable, and not delay till when situations have become serious and hard to deal with.

This counsel was given by Mrs Aisha Dania Ogieriakhi, the proprietress of Blue Baby Support Initiative, a global advocacy non governmental organisation for needy children and mothers.

She made this recommendation in her year-end message to beneficiaries, volunteers and benefactors of Blue Baby Support Initiative, whom she applauded for their dedication to the tenets and objectives of the organisation.
Speaking after Christmas with Love organised to make merry with indigent Orphans and Vulnerable Children of Baptist Hospital in Ejigbo, a suburb of Osun state Nigeria, she posited that:

“These children are precious before God, and we must not for any reason allow them to suffer and have their future short-changed. It behooves on us to liaise with other well meaning and socially responsible organisations to support the governments in providing succour for them

“However, some cases appear near irredeemable because they have grown and developed beyond quick fix because their parents would not come out and access help quickly. Parents should please not see these children as a curse. Please these children are gift from God and provision for their sustenance will always come from God. Your duty as a parent is to seek that help by speaking up early”, she added

Corroborating Aisha Dania Ogieriakhi in her vote of thanks, Mrs Alamu Abosede, the Focal Person for HIV Counseling and Testing at Baptist Hospital Ejigbo, said:
“We work in collaboration with humanitarian and health support NGOs to provide help for the children of this village. But the parents of special children with down-syndrome and other challenges should come out and talk

“We have over 400 defenceless children in our care, many have graduated. The management and the children are very grateful to Blue Baby Support Initiative for the year-round support given us to sustain the dream of this scheme. We pray that God will continue to bless Blue Baby Support Initiative and all your people”

According to Aisha Dania Ogieriakhi, Blue Baby Support Initiative is created to advance the objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, which is about providing health and wellbeing for everyone by 2030.

Hence, rural women, children and teenage mothers are targeted with outreaches and orientation programs; lifesaving wares and equipment for rural medical centers and provision of palliatives for orphaned and vulnerable children.

Christmas with Love is Blue Baby Support Initiatives way of celebrating the love of God with Orphans and Vulnerable Children, their mothers and all the people spending the holiday in the hospital.

2018 activities included a visit to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and fanfare with the Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Makurdi, Ibadan and Ejigbo in Osun State Nigeria.

•Governor hails Tinubu for laying solid foundation for civil service
by Oziegbe Okoeki

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday swore in Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola as the state’s 21st Head of Service (HoS) as well as six new permanent secretaries.

The governor urged the new HoS to inject fresh ideas, vibrancy and more energy to take the public service to greater heights.

He said these make Lagos a globally recognised city-state with a commitment to efficiency, effectiveness, innovation and creativity in service delivery.

The new permanent secretaries, who have been deployed to various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), are: Dr. Titilayo Goncalves (Ministry of Health), Mr Adeyemi Kosoko (Education District IV), Dr Sherifat Balogun (Ministry of Youth and Social Development), Mr Segun Adeniji (Health Service Commission), Mrs Abosede Adelaja (Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture) and Dr Lateef Lawal (Primary Healthcare Board).

Dignitaries at the ceremony included All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule, former Deputy Governor Femi Pedro, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, House of Representatives Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, APC Southwest Women Leader, Chief Kemi Nelson and the Elegushi of Ikate land, Oba Saheed Elegushi.

Describing the appointments as thoroughly deserving, Ambode said a new chapter had been opened in the state’s public service.

The governor urged the appointees to justify their elevation by working harder to satisfy the expectations of the people.

Expressing optimism in the ability of Muri-Okunola to perform well due of his capacity, knowledge, exposure, experience and youthful energy, Ambode said it was important for him to lead by example and encourage accountability and professionalism.

He added: “Following the swearing in of the new Head of Service, a new chapter has just been opened in the history of the Lagos State public service. It is a new chapter with high expectations for the injection of new energy and vibrancy that will move our public service to new heights.”

To Muri-Okunola, he said: “As the number one civil servant in Lagos State, you must demonstrate leadership and lead by example for others, including the Body of Permanent Secretaries, to follow. You have a responsibility to provide direction and encourage accountability, transparency, professionalism and a high sense of discipline. Your actions must be based on sound and objective judgment with consideration for merit and proven record of competence and loyalty.

“I have no doubt in my mind that under your leadership, Lagos State public service will achieve great strides and record outstanding achievements as a role model for other public service institutions in Africa.”

The governor, who underscored the strategic important role of the civil service, said the extent to which any government succeeds in the implementation of its policies and programmes largely depends on the quality and orientation of its civil service.

He said there was a need for the new leadership to adopt necessary measures and initiatives to foster growth and development.

Praising Asiwaju Tinubu for laying a solid foundation for the transformation of the civl service, the governor also hailed the immediate past HoS, Mrs Folashade Adesoye, for serving meritoriously and strengthening the public service.
