BREAKING: PDP rejects presidential election results

BREAKING: PDP rejects presidential election results

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu

Chinedu Asadu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected results of the presidential elections being announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Uche Secondus, PDP national chairman, said the results being announced are “incorrect and unacceptable” to the party.

He said this at an ongoing press conference in Abuja.

The PDP national chairman said the party has discovered “irregularities” in results so far announced from Nasarawa state and the FCT.

He alleged that the current administration “colluded” with INEC and security agencies to manipulate results from polling units across the country.

“Our collation centres have the original results from all the polling units in the country. That is from where are going to reclaim our results,” he said.

“The results are incorrect and unacceptable to our party. Officials of the APC working with INEC have decided to alter results to affect our people. This must now be resisted by every well-meaning Nigerian.

“INEC must live up to its responsibility. They are under pressure. We have the facts and when the time comes, we begin to release them.”

Secondus added the PDP will update Nigerians “as time goes on” regarding their decisions in other states yet to be announced.

Dogara wins 4th term in Bauchi

Dogara wins 4th term in Bauchi

by Adenuga David, Bauchi

House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) was on Sunday declared winner of Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Federal Constituency Bauchi.

He polled 73,609 votes to secure a fourth consecutive term.

He defeated his closest rival Dalhatu Kantana of the All Progressive Congress APC who bagged 50,708 votes.

The returning officer, Professor Muhammed Abdulhamid declared Dogara the winner at the federal constituency collation centre in Zwall at Tafawa Balewa local government.

The Speaker, who decamped from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC for the PDP last year, coasted home in home town Bogoro where APC polled 30,216 and PDP scored 25,829.

In Dass LGA, APC polled 16,661, PDP got 10,222 while in Tafawa Balewa, APC got 30,201 PDP garnered 37,558 votes.

INEC had earlier rescheduled election at a polling unit in Kopti for Sunday due to the failure of the smart card reader deployed, which delayed the collation of result.

The Bauchi politician was first elected to the parliament in 2007 as a member of the PDP.

He defected to the APC in 2014 as part of the new-PDP bloc that revolted ahead of the 2015 elections.

Dogara has been in the Lower Chamber for 12 years, serving as Speaker in the last three and half years.

‘Corps members couldn’t operate card readers during elections’

‘Corps members couldn’t operate card readers during elections’

Adelani Adepegba, Lokoja

The Local Government Collation Officer in charge of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, Dr. Joseph Folorunso, has said some members of the National Youth Service Corps serving as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission couldn’t operate the card readers during Saturday’s poll in the state.

He stated that they messed up the elections in some polling units as some of them couldn’t operate the smart card reader despite the intensive training the commission organised for them.

Speaking during the declaration of election results at the Kogi INEC office in Lokoja on Sunday, Folorunso, who is a lecturer at the Kogi State University, said card readers were not used in many polling units because the corps members couldn’t operate them.

The collation officer said if he had his way, he would prevent such corps members from serving as electoral officers in future elections.

He stated that some of the corps members were lackadaisical during the training, hence their inability to operate the card readers.

The lecturer advised INEC to engage only diligent and competent corps members as ad hoc staff in future elections to avoid problems.

He said, “Some of them messed up the elections because they could not operate the card readers. A senior officer approached one of them and said ‘upon all I taught you, show me how to operate this card reader.’

“You would be shocked that a corps member who claimed she attended the training could not operate the card reader. Under that disguise, they didn’t use the card readers.”

Folorunso said it was disheartening that a graduate trained on the use of a card reader was unable to use the device which was critical to the electoral process.

He noted, “It was very disheartening for some of us possibly because we work in the academic environment. These are people who make it look like our graduates are unemployable, but it is not so. It’s just that when they were training them, some of them were lackadaisical, pressing their phones, talking to their boyfriends or girlfriends as if anyhow they must recruit them.’’
