Factors that led to Saraki’s fall

ANALYSIS: 13 factors that ‘triggered’ Saraki’s fall in Kwara

Oladeinde Olawoyin

Senate President, Bukola Saraki
On Saturday, Senate President Bukola Saraki lost in his bid to return to the Senate.

In the National Assembly elections held in Kwara Central Senatorial District, Mr Saraki, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost to Ibrahim Oloriegbe of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The returning officer, Olawole Obiyemi, a professor of human kinetics education at the University of Ilorin, said Mr Saraki polled 68,994 votes while Mr Oloriegbe poled 123, 808 votes.

Mr Oloriegbe was thereafter declared the senator-elect in Kwara Central Senatorial District.

Aside from losing his bid, the Senate president lost all four of the local governments in his senatorial district and could not deliver his local government and state to PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Tsunami
Similarly, Mr Saraki’s numerous allies and anointed candidates lost in all of the seats contested in the state as the APC won all three senatorial positions and all of the House of Representatives seats across the state.

Analysts opine that the development puts an end to Mr Saraki’s hegemonic influence in Kwara politics, which began effectively in 2011 after he displaced his late father, Olusola Saraki.

PREMIUM TIMES observes that a number of factors helped the opposition displace the Senate President and his party, the PDP, in the state. This newspaper hereby highlights the factors that triggered his fall in Kwara politics.

1. Unpaid Salaries
By far the most potent weapon the opposition used against the Senate president and his party was the issue of unpaid salaries. People affected include teachers, local government officials and pensioners, among others.

The Kwara State Government has for long had protracted battles with workers in the state over unpaid salaries.

There have been a series of protests in the past over the issue.

In 2017, an advocacy group, Kwara Must Change, claimed that the rate of suicides among Kwara civil servant was high because of unpaid salary arrears.

Last September, teachers In the state threatened to embark on strike over welfare issues.

While Mr Saraki is not the current state governor, having served in that position between 2003 and 2011, residents of the state hardly separate the Abdulfatah Ahmed-led state government’s performance from the Senate president.

In effect, he is widely seen as immensely influential in the decision-making process of the Kwara government. Due to the harsh economic conditions thrown up by the unpaid salary controversies, it was all but easy for the opposition to ride on this wave and convince affected people to vote out the PDP.

2. Kwara South opposition/Oke-Ero bye-election
Offa, a major town in Kwara South, is considered the home of opposition in Kwara politics. From the second republic through the third and the current dispensation, the town is known for standing shoulder high against the Saraki dynasty.

Politicians from the town, notably Sunday Olawoyin, a leading disciple of the late Obafemi Awolowo, were known to have stood in the “progressive” camp, standing as the nemesis of the Saraki establishment.

The struggle that resulted in Mr Saraki’s fall on Saturday is said to have its root in Offa and other parts of Kwara South, beginning with the Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero Federal constituency bye-election which the APC won in 2018. But shortly before the bye-election, the anti-Saraki sentiment in the town was however intensified by the Offa robbery debacle of April 2018.

3. Offa Robbery Debacle
In April 2018, police officers, residents and bank customers were murdered in a robbery operation that lasted for over an hour in Offa, Kwara State.

The robbers blew up entrances into the banks with dynamite, before carting away money from about five banks, then killing scores of people.

By June, suspects arrested by the police allegedly implicated Mr Saraki in their confessional statements, Jimoh Moshood, Force Public Relations Officer, said.

A slew of controversial developments, including evidence presented by police, would later raise public concern about Mr Saraki and the Kwara State Governor’s involvement in the debacle.

Offa, Omu-Aran, Erin-Ile and other adjoining communities have for years been at the mercy of bank robbers, especially during Yuletide periods. Although the Senate president denied all allegations, it did little to address the negative opinion formed against him by the people, which the opposition latched on.

A resident told PREMIUM TIMES on the eve of the election that, based on the developments, the people are not convinced the Senate president (and Kwara State Government) had no connection with the suspects.

4. Defection to PDP
In July, Senate President Bukola Saraki defected to the PDP, alongside Kwara Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed. Mr Ahmed, like Mr Saraki, said he defected “having realised that the All Progressive Congress (APC) can longer serve as a platform for achieving the aspirations and expectations” of his people.

Mr Saraki joined the APC on January 29, 2014, after falling out with the then PDP government, led by President Goodluck Jonathan. Shortly after his defection, a huge number of PDP chieftains in the state defected into the APC en masse.

Mr Saraki’s defection to PDP, analysts said, made him vulnerable in the hands of the opposition APC, which controlled the government at the centre.

5. ‘Federal Might’
In all of the Saraki dynasty’s electoral battles since 2003, it never worked against the government at the centre, except in 2015. In 2003, the late Olusola Saraki supported his son, Bukola, on the platform of the then ruling PDP. The younger Saraki sought re-election in 2007 and installed his candidate, Mr Ahmed, in 2011––on the platform of same ruling party.

In 2015, although Mr Saraki’s political camp worked against the Jonathan-led PDP government, it was widely believed that the people also embraced the APC.

In last Saturday’s election, the absence of federal support exposed the weaknesses of the Saraki camp, especially in Asa Local Government and other places rumoured to be its “rigging stronghold”, which the opposition exploited.

6. ‘ Ilorin’s allied forces’
For decades, one of the reasons why anti-Saraki dynasty electoral battles in Kwara State have always been lost is that they were most often championed by people outside of Ilorin, the state capital. From John Dara through Lai Mohammed to Simeon Ajibola, people outside of Ilorin rarely pull the crowd for reasons analysts opine may be cultural and ethno-religious solidarity.

In the last election, however, many of those considered the backbone of the Saraki winning machinery in the heart of Ilorin were recruited into what the APC called the “struggle to liberate Kwara”.

With Lai Mohammed and APC governorship aspirant, Abdulrazaq Abdulrahman leading the pack, Saraki’s ex-loyalists including Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Yinka Aluko, Moshood Mustapha, Cook Olododo and others like Yahaya Seriki, Abdulyekeen Alajagusi were on the ground in the emirate city to deliver for APC.

7. Religious propaganda
Although its use always raises questions, propaganda plays a key role in elections in Nigeria.

In Kwara, one tactic used against the Senate president was to question his Islamic faith. “People think he is not a Muslim but only deceives Ilorin with that identity. Some of our people now call him ‘Gideon’,” a voter who declined to have his name in print told PREMIUM TIMES in Post Office area of the city days before the election.

Ilorin is a deeply religious society and some of the people connected with it and spread the claim, without confirming its veracity.

On the other hand, the APC also appealed to the Christian population, using its “O to ge” mantra. Shortly after the election was postponed, Kayode Alabi, APC deputy governorship candidate visited churches in Ilorin to canvass for support wherein he recited Bible verses containing the “o to ge” mantra.

There are also allegations of being “arrogant”, “aloof” and other character flaws levelled against the Senate president which the opposition amplified.

8 Kwara North revolt
Kwara north is generally considered to be the most underdeveloped part of Kwara State. Besides, the region considers itself the most ‘politically marginalised’ part of the state in its struggle to produce the state governor.

In the buildup to the election, youth in the region were reported to be violent toward the Saraki dynasty. In Kaiama, Ilesa-Baruba and other parts of Kwara North, random videos showed how the people rejected the PDP in its campaign across communities in the district.

Troubled by the rejection the party witnessed across the region, reports said Mr Saraki promised to zone the governorship position to the region in 2023.

The moves, however, did little to sway voters’ decision as results from the region showed that the people embraced the APC and rejected the PDP.

The party swept all legislative seats with wide margin and residents voted massively for APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

9. Influence of local media
When the history of the fall of Mr Saraki and the PDP in the state is documented, local media especially those owned by opposition politicians would get a mention.

Abu Abdullahi, a member of the APC in the state, told PREMIUM TIMES that affairs of the state have largely been kept in secrecy for years until the opposition had alternative media to air their grievances.

“They (PDP/Saraki) controlled state-owned media houses in the past and people had no access to information that affect them,” Mr Abdullahi said in Yoruba. He added, however, that with the emergence of independent radio stations, the people were informed about “the various excesses of the PDP government,” unlike in the past.

PREMIUM TIMES observed that in Ilorin, Sobi FM remains one popular private radio station considered the people’s favourite, especially because of its newspaper review programme “Feli-feli”. The station, owned by APC guber aspirant, Lukman Mustapha, has had to shake off allegations of partisanship.

“The opposition didn’t have access to the state government-owned Radio Kwara so they started with Harmony FM, but with many other stations now available, the people are better informed,” Mr Abdullahi added.

10. ‘O to ge’ – The APC ‘revolutionary’ campaign mantra
As far as the 2019 general election is concerned, the Kwara APC “O to ge!” mantra would go down as the most potent campaign mantra.

PREMIUM TIMES observes that one unique aspect of the “O to ge” campaign is the ‘revolutionary’ tone it took, with most politically conscious Kwarans seeing the movement as one meant for “liberation”.

The campaign was so infectious that residents in the state expressed it in different forms, with motorcycle riders and cab drivers popularly using the horn of their cars and motorcycles to make the sound in the city centre.

Although the Kwara APC was careful about labelling the Saraki family largely because of the involvement of Gbemisola Saraki in their campaign, the subtle campaign narrative that appealed to the people centred on the ‘revolutionary’ need to end the Saraki hegemony in the state. PDP’s ‘O tun ya’ response did little to dilute the potency of the mantra.

On Saturday, immediately after Mr Saraki was declared to have lost out in the election, those present at the INEC office ended the session with “solidarity” songs typical of student revolutionary struggles.

11. Corruption Allegations
In August, the APC listed what it called Mr Saraki’s long list of corruption cases. Among the ‘cases’ listed were allegations of fraud which led to the collapse of Société Générale Bank; alleged illegal receipt of salary from Kwara State treasury after leaving office; misappropriation of Kwara State funds; the various revelations in the Panama and Paradise Papers investigations, among others.

Mr Saraki’s political career has been defined largely by allegations of corrupt practices.

Although the concerns could be waved away as inconsequential, random interviews with residents of Ilorin before and after the election showed that some of the people were worried about the allegations and they indeed affected voters’ decision. “Workers who have not been paid salaries hear of billions and millions allegedly ‘looted’ by Saraki in the news and you expect them not to be worried? Something will give in,” said Abdulhakeem Adeyemi, a resident.

The APC also intensified its campaign using these allegations as a bulwark. It eventually succeeded in deepening the anti-Saraki feeling across the state.

12 The secret tape
Another factor that arguably contributed to the dent on Mr Saraki’s image in Kwara was the release of a November 2018 secret tape. In the tape, Mr Saraki was heard attributing his major grouse with President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to the alleged suffering of Kwara State indigenes due to the absence of federal appointments despite committing resources to the president’s electoral success in 2015.

Although the Senate president made the statements to appeal to pity and calm fraying nerves, claims that he paid money for election in 30 states did not go down well with some Kwarans. “Some collected N300 million, while some collected N400 million, some collected N200 million,” Mr Saraki was heard saying.

In the midst of unpaid salaries and grinding poverty, some residents said, such news items had domino effect on people’s perception. That was in addition to his numerous battles with Mr Buhari, whom a significant percentage of the people in the state still consider “honest and pro-poor”.

13. Obscene pension arrangement and alleged Illegal salaries
In May 2016, reports said the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) sitting in Abuja was informed of how Senate President Bukola Saraki continued to get paid his salary by the Kwara State Government after he had stepped down as the governor of the state on May 29, 2011. Details were also laid bare on the numerous lodgments and transfers made by Mr Saraki and his aide during his tenure as governor of the state, with some occurring several times in one day.

Michael Wetkas, an EFCC detective, claimed that Mr Saraki received monthly salaries from June 2011, when he left office as governor of the state, to August 2015 when he served as a senator. There were also reports of obsecene pension entitlements accruing to the Senate president. All of these were amplified in local media via their newspaper review programmes, often broadcast in Yoruba across radio stations in Kwara. Prominent among the programmes at the time was “PDP Gbode”, aired on Harmony FM, Idofian. When he defected into the PDP and earstwhile members of the party defected en masse into APC, the same programme philosophy was extended to Sobi FM’s prime-time programme, “O to ge!”

Mr Saraki’s perception troubles were compounded by these reports, even as Kwara battle with unpaid salaries. A building allegedly owned by the Senate president around the Government House area, GRA, was often pointed at by residents as “proceeds” of the obscene acquisitions. By the time the dust would settle, the people had made up their mind to send him and his loyalists packing. His moves to offset salary arrears owed workers and local chiefs did little to address the concern.

Ayeni took N17.4bn cash from Skye Bank in one year —EFCC

Ayeni took N17.4bn cash from Skye Bank in one year —EFCC

Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says a former Chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc (now Polaris Bank), Mr. Tunde Ayeni, took N17bn raw cash from the Suspense account of the bank between January 1 and December 31, 2014.

The EFCC further alleged that Ayeni received N3.75bn in cash from the same account the following year.

The allegations are part of the 10 fraud charges filed against Ayeni and three others before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suit is separate from the N4.75bn and $5m fraud charge Ayeni and a former Managing Director of the bank, Timothy Oguntayo, are facing before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of a Federal High Court.

According to a charge sheet marked FHC/Abuja/CR/37/2019 which was obtained by our correspondent, Ayeni, Oguntayo, Control Dredging Company Limited and Royaltex Paramount Ventures Limited allegedly laundered over N23bn between 2014 and 2015.

The EFCC alleged that on December 24, 2014, Ayeni, while being chairman of the board of Skye Bank, transferred N3bn from the account of the defunct Skye Bank’s Suspense Account to a First City Monument Bank account with number 0758662025 belonging to Control Dredging Company Limited, another company owned by Ayeni.

The commission alleged that the act was in contravention of Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 which is punishable under Section 15 of the same Act.

The anti-graft agency further alleged that Ayeni and Oguntayo conspired with others on March 25, 2015 to transfer the sum of N1.25bn from the Suspense Account of Skye Bank to the Skye Bank account of Royaltex Paramount Ventures Limited, another company owned by Ayeni.

One of the charges read, “That you, Tunde Ayeni, whilst being the Chairman, Board of Directors of the defunct Skye Bank Plc between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did accept cash payment of the aggregate sum N17, 415, 080, 000.00 taken from the defunct Skye Bank Plc Suspense account and delivered to you by the staff of the defunct Skye Bank Plc which money you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit, fraud and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 15(2)(b) and (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended).”

The EFCC listed nine witnesses against Ayeni and others.

They include four employees of the bank, officials of the EFCC and representatives of FCMB.

The exhibits which will be tendered in court include written statements, internal bank memos, cash delivery notes and forms, various bank documents, bank instruments and incorporation documents.

Some witnesses listed include Bamidele Are, Kayode Ojo-Osagie, Azeem Abiodun and Olufemi Phillips who are all employees of the bank.

Others listed are Mr. Dare Folarin, Akingbade Adebayo, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed, Mr. Otitoju Moses, Mr. Longe Lolade, Mr. Umar Kangiwa, Abubakar Madaki amongst others.

Ayeni first came under investigation by the EFCC in 2016 when Skye Bank began to show signs of distress.

At the time it was taken over by Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018, Skye Bank had a negative net asset worth of N1tn as to the opposed capital requirement of N25bn for Nigerian banks.

This implied that the bank had irredeemably lost any justification to exist as a bank and was operating as a mere drain on depositors’ funds.

It was alleged that penchant of members of the board of the defunct bank for taking loans without due process accounted for N446bn in insider related loans drawn from Skye Bank.

Buhari deserves more votes than he got —Sheriff, Marafa

A former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff and Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC-Zamfara Central) in separate press interviews said that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves more votes than he got in the February 23 presidential election.

The duo spoke with State House correspondents on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress polled 15,191,847 votes to defeat the country’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party, who had 11,262,978 votes.

According to Sheriff, Buhari’s victory is for all Nigerians as he has done within four years what no other President has done in the history of Nigeria.

He said that Buhari came to power when oil price was less than 30 dollars per barrel yet the president was able to achieve much.

Sheriff said that he was not surprised about the victory because Nigerians were very smart people who knew what they wanted.

“If you look at the antecedents of all the people that contested elections with President Buhari, none has 10 per cent of his credibility.

“This is a man, who is not interested in what every Nigerian is interested in, to grab wealth and enrich themselves; he is there for the Nigerian people; he believes Nigeria should be better than where we are.

“He had very simple message at the campaigns–that we have started fighting corruption; building the economy and lives of Nigerians need to be improved.

“The message resonated with Nigerians because for instance, I did not go to my village for four years before the 2015 elections; Boko Haram had occupied all our local government areas in Borno but today, you can drive to any part of Borno.

“So, whatever the people of Borno did for Buhari last Saturday, we are only saying thank you for what he has done; if the atmosphere was clearer, Borno would have produced two million votes.

“I don’t know why the PDP members are grumbling when the registered voters are more than two million and we only gave the president 836,000,’’ he said.

He said that Buhari got over a million votes in Borno when he was the governor and wondered why there was no complaint then.

The former governor described the election as the most transparent election that ever took place in the history of Nigeria.

He urged the opposition to embrace peace and plan for 2023 as President Buhari has assured that he would carry everyone along.

On his part, Marafa said it was an inherent human behaviour to always reject failure, saying there was nothing unusual about opposition’s rejection of the presidential election result.

He said that the most important thing was that success had been recorded and was accepted by all Nigerians and the international community.

Marafa said that he was not satisfied with the number of votes that came out of Zamfara State.

“I believe we can do more than that; we have 1.7 million registered voters and we recorded only about 400,000 votes.

“So, what is the big deal about it and if you look at all the states, I think the performance is quite below 60 per cent in most of the states.

“We have more than 72 million voters in the country; in fact we are supposed to lament the situation; because Nigerians are supposed to be more politically aware and they are supposed to turn out and vote much more than they did.’’

The senator said that many people were united in the presidential election because of the candidacy of Buhari but there would be a lot of disparities in the governorship election across the states.

He urged Nigerians to vote for people they could trust; people that could protect their lives and property and people that could bring about prosperity.

“This is to tell you that the president is fashioning a new brand of democracy without bitterness; people should be allowed to choose who they want,’’ he said.

Teacher remanded in prison for defiling, impregnating 14-year-old pupil

Teacher remanded in prison for defiling, impregnating 14-year-old pupil

Afeez Hanafi

A 34-year-old teacher at a school in Lagos, Quaseem Olayiwola, has been remanded in prison custody, following his arrest and arraignment for alleged defilement of his pupil.

Olayiwola reportedly had unlawful sex with the 14-year-old pupil which made the girl pregnant.

City Round learnt that the father of the victim reported the incident to the police at the Ayobo Police Division and the teacher was arrested.

Preliminary investigation conducted by the police revealed that Olayiwola committed the indecent act between October 2018 and January 2019 in a hotel.

He was said to have been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja for further investigation.

He was subsequently arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba on one count of defilement.

A police prosecutor, Inspector Donny Raphael, who brought Olayiwola before the court on Thursday, said the offence was punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The charge read, “That you, Quaseem Olayiwola ‘M’, between October 2018 and January 2019 at Olubar Hotel C&S area, Ayobo, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully defile a 14-year-old girl by having intercourse with her and impregnating her. You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The defendant’s plea was not taken by the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsami.

Osunsanmi ordered that Olayiwola be remanded in prison custody pending the outcome of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions on the matter.

Senate: How Saraki, Akpabio, others lost out

Senate: ‘How we dislodged Saraki, Ajimobi, Akpabio, Alasoadura, Sani’

When the 9th National Assembly takes off in June, some of the notable names that will be missing on Senators list are Bukola Saraki, the current Senate President; Abiola Ajimobi, current governor of Oyo State ; Godswill Akpabio, erstwhile Minority Leader of the Red Chambers and former governor of Akwa Ibom State; popular human rights activist Shehu Sani; and the Chairman,Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream); Tayo Alasoadura following their defeat in last weekend’s election. How did it happen? Those who defeated them spoke to correspondents Abdulgafar ALABELEWE, Bassey ANTHONY; Damisi OJO, Akure; Yinka ADENIRAN, Ibadan and Adekunle JIMOH, Ilorin

The National Assembly election is only a week old today, but the Senator elect for Kwara Central,Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe is already taking stock of his victory over Senate President Bukola Saraki. Oloriegbe, a former World Health Organisation (WHO) consultant, thanked God and the people for making his victory possible.

Saraki’s cup is full – Oloriegbe

“My reaction is that of gratitude to the Almighty God. He who gives power to who He wishes and takes power from He wishes,” he said in an interview in Ilorin.

He said the people went a step further to demonstrate that they meant business with to the slogan “O to ge”.

The people, according to him, decided to “walk the talk because the talk has been enough is enough (“O to ge”) and the voice was loud.

“This voice was demonstrated at the polls by voting out those that they considered were not delivering the dividends of democracy in the real sense of it. Those they considered as selfish, self-centred and those that used our commonwealth for self.

“Those that have not provided Kwarans good education, healthcare, good roads, potable water. Those that have been cutting the people’s salaries. These are all the issues and more. Lack of job opportunities for the youth.

“The other reaction is to look at the enormity of the current situation and the expectations of the people from us for the true change to happen in the state. But on that one, my belief is that we have good intention and our belief is that the people are still with us and they should be patient with us to start together with them to correct the wrongs on the past.”

On the description of the voting pattern in the state as a revolution,Oloriegbe said: “ It is a combination of so many factors. It is not only about the revolution. Yes, there was that revolutionary movement of ‘O to ge’.

“Kwara central people had made request to opposition parties to present candidates that are credible and have track records of performance for them to vote.

“O to ge came up, but going back into history, 2015 people were in despair against the candidates presented by the opposition party against the status quo.

“Then, if you go back to 2011 when I was the candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), if you look at the performance when my current opponent, Senator Bukola Saraki, was a sitting governor, people voted massively for me.

“The supposed winning by him then came from Asa local government area of the state, where the voters’ turnout was claimed to be over 80 percent as compared to the Ilorin metropolis where the voters’ turnout was put at about 40 percent.

“That was a reflection of what should have been. In my view, I think the two factors came together. But far and above all those factors and human conjectures, it is God’s time that has come.

“As we all know, in life nobody will live in perpetuity. It is only God.”

Asked what had changed between the previous elections when Saraki had defeated him and now for the people to go for him this time around, the senator-elect said: “There are several things that have probably changed. But there are certain things that have not changed.

“Even in 2011 when he said he defeated me and I accepted the verdict but then at the tribunal, we proved that there were a lot of irregularities in that election. But through the use of the federal might, we were not able to get anywhere.

“That was unfair. Now we have not used any federal might, we have ensured a level-playing ground. Apart from that, INEC is now stronger and more transparent. The use of the card readers has prevented many politicians to manipulate the elections. With card readers, there cannot be over-voting again.

“What has changed again is that the cup of the Saraki dynasty is full beyond what the people can tolerate.

“People have become intolerable of the bad governance they have been experiencing in the last eight years.

“Eight years ago, when he left as governor for the Senate, things were not as bad as they are now. Salaries of workers were paid then but now they are not paid.

“The current Abdulfatah Ahmed administration, which Saraki installed, has not performed at all. Of course, we cannot totally remove his attitude to the APC government, a platform that he used to get the Senate Presidency.

“He worked against that party to become a minority in the National Assembly, minority in terms of leaders and not in terms of membership; that is particularly important for us, especially Ilorin people as he cannot handle trust.

“He used his position to work against Buhari. Buhari, in Ilorin, is a friend by virtue of his friendship and relationship with the late Major General Tunde Idiagbon. Ilorin people see the sincerity and credibility of Buhari.”

It’s a surprise Shehu Sani got up to 70,000 votes, says Uba Sani

Kaduna Central Senator-elect, Malam Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress (APC),who defeated incumbent Senator Shehu Sani, also spoke on his own triumph at the polls.

Sani came a distant third in the race with 70,613 votes.

Second was Lawal Adamu of the PDP who had 195,497 votes. Uba Sani recorded 355,242 votes.

Aiming a dig at Shehu, the senator-elect said: “It is even a surprise to me that Shehu Sani got up the 70,000 votes that he got. I didn’t even expect him to get more than half of what he got. So, I congratulate him for even getting 70,000 votes.”

They used to be in the same party,APC,until Shehu fell out with Governor Nasir El-Rufai apparently because of Shehu’s ambition to succeed the former.

A parting of ways between the governor and Shehu soon came when El-Rufai vehemently refused to give the senator another chance to contest on the platform of the APC.

He accused Shehu of working against the interest of the people by voting in the Senate against the approval of a $350million World Bank loan for the state.

Shehu moved on and berthed in the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Uba Sani believes that Shehu’s constituents have repaid him back for abandoning them.

“Defeating an incumbent like Senator Shehu Sani is as easy as anything because, right from the very moment he was elected, he abandoned the principles of the APC,” he told The Nation.

He added: “The principles of the APC require that you are close to the people, but he abandoned the very people that elected him.

“Kaduna central zone is a very important one, where you have a lot of elite and highly educated people, who know what is going on in the National Assembly.

“So, if you don’t constantly come back to tell them what you are doing, ask about their problems and go back to the assembly to make a case for them, and promote the development of their constituency, they will vote you out.

“An instance is the issue of the $350million World Bank loan the Kaduna State government requested for. Shehu Sani rejected it. He might have take n it as a joke, and I saw his explanation for rejecting the loan, but that was a major mistake he made. You don’t toy with the interest of your people; we are talking about nine million people of Kaduna State.

“When you look at the template we submitted to the World Bank, we are supposed to build over 1,000 schools, primary and secondary schools and enhance our healthcare. We are building infrastructure in Kaduna, and someone sat there saying, I am going to block this loan, simply because he didn’t want Governor Nasir El-Rufai to achieve anything.

“For me, it is not about El-Rufai, it is about nine million people of Kaduna State, and that singular act made us to be able to defeat the incumbent. He committed a lot of unfortunate errors.

“I also challenge you to go to his constituency office, you will see it taken over by dust, because he has not opened it in the last two years. You cannot do that in Kaduna central, and that is why we found it very easy to defeat the incumbent.”

Uba Sani also said that the party on which platform he(Shehu Sani)contested –PRP- has no structure to win an election.

His words: ” I don’t think the PRP has any structure on ground to win an election. In fact, he (Shehu) should be worried that it is so bad that he even lost in his polling unit; APC which is my party is a very popular one in Kaduna central zone, Kaduna State and Nigeria as a whole.

“The truth of the matter is that, we never regarded PRP as our challenger in this contest and of course, you know that the major reason why he was rejected is that, he abandoned his people. “Take for example the situation in Birnin Gwari, the road from Kaduna to Birnin Gwari, which is a federal one, and as a senator for almost four years, he never for one day made a case for the government to do anything on the road until recently when Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai reached out to the federal government, which has made a commitment to fixing the road.

“So, for me, the people of Birnin Gwari rejected him because he abandoned them; he never for one day stood up on the floor of the National Assembly to move a motion on the security challenges in Birnin Gwari.

Why Ajimobi fell- Balogun

The senator-elect for Oyo South District, Dr Kola Balogun, sees the hand of God in his election.

“My victory is absolutely by God’s mercy,” Balogun told The Nation in Ibadan.

He said: “My victory is absolutely by God’s mercy.

“And talking about political factors, I will say that through my interaction with the people of the district, I discovered that they were tired of government policies and programmes, particularly at the local level.

“There is so much poverty, there is the inability of the government to develop the local economy, pay salaries promptly, pay serious attention to the entitlements of pensioners, ensure that collapsing infrastructure are attended to, revamp the education sector, inability to pay teachers’ salaries, provide teaching aids, affordable healthcare, develop agriculture, which is one of what we can leverage on to provide employment for our youths, inability to assist market men and women with low interest loans and inability of the government to provide security. All these produced hopelessness.

“But we presented better alternatives which people embraced. We also leveraged on my track record. They also saw my sincerity of purpose during my interaction with them. They saw that I could represent them well.”

On how he feels after defeating the incumbent, Sen. Soji Akanbi and the APC candidate, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Balogun said: “I give all the glory to God. It is not by my power. I thank God and I feel fulfilled. I also thank the good people of Oyo South Senatorial District for their tremendous show of support. I reassure them that I will not disappoint them.”

I knew God was going help me defeat Akpabio, says Ekpenyong

Dr. Chris Ekpenyong, who defeated Senator Godswill Akpabio in Akwa Ibom Northwest also attributes his victory to God.

Ekpenyong, deputy governor of the state between 1999 and 2007, said his own political sagacity also went a long way to give him victory.

“It was just like what happened to Jehoshaphat in the Bible when he was accosted by people with chariots and weapons and he called upon the name of the Lord and the enemies vanished,” he said in Uyo.

“I knew I was going to beat him because I was backed up by the blood of Jesus Christ.

“God led me to the political battle field with prayers as my only weapon of war. I made several supplications to God asking Him to let His will be done in the election.

“I’m glad God gave me victory; it shows that there is always victory in humility. I told God to come and set His people free the way He set the Israelites free from the hands of pharoah.”

On his mission in the Senate, Ekpeyong said:“Since the war ended, our people are yet to be rehabilitated and reintegrated. There is no reconstruction and we are still having the relics of war.

“We need reconstruction, rehabilitation and reintegration. Governments have come and gone, yet no action.

“We need someone to bring it to the front burner. My primary responsibility is to ensure that there will be good laws and resolutions that will positively change the fortunes of the people of Akwa Ibom north west senatorial district. My victory is from God”.

He said he supported and worked for Senator Godswill Akpabio’s reelection until he dumped the PDP for APC in August 2018.

According to him, “In 2007 when I laboured for power shift to our senatorial district, Akpabio contested and won as governor; I supported him.

“When he wanted to go for a second term, he took me to the then President Jonathan and I knelt down and begged Jonathan to allow him contest a second term as governor.

“I didn’t do it for a fee but I showed humility in service.

“In 2015, Akpabio went to the Senate, I supported him. Even in 2018 when he declared for reelection, I supported him wholeheartedly until he left PDP for APC and the PDP fielded me to contest against him. It is just a change of baton.

“My name is Christopher and I am a cross bearer, I bear the cross of my people “.

Akinyelure: my victory is of God

Mr.Ayo Akinyelure (PDP) is returning to the Senate for a second time after defeating Mr.Tayo Alasoadura (APC) and former Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Zenith Labour Party in the contest for the Ondo Central District ticket.

Incidentally, it was Alasoadura who defeated Akinyelure in 2015.Akinyelure,like Ekpeyong and Balogun, attributed his victory to God.

He was also full of praises for his constituents for reposing confidence in him.

“My people had resolved to pay me back for the good work I delivered to Ondo Central during my stewardship in the 7th Assembly as the senator that represented the district,” he said.

“During that period, I was able to add value to the citizenry of the district by providing employment for over 550 graduates in various federal ministries and parastatals and many empowerment programmes designed to raise my people.”

Recalling his defeat by Alasoadura in 2015,the senator-elect said:”When I was defeated in 2015 election by Senator Alasoadura, I was the first to congratulate him and accepted the verdict of my people.

“The incumbent came second in the just concluded election, and has congratulated me.”

This developnent,he said, demonstrated the spirit of sportsmanship.

However, he said he was still expecting a congratulatory message from former Governor Mimiko.

He said:”He should remember that one good turn deserves another. We all stood by him when the whole Ondo State decided to vote him twice as governor of the state.

Hide original message

“Ondo State belongs all of us and therefore, any one of us is qualified at one time or the other to be chosen by the majority of the people of Ondo State, particularly Ondo Central to represent their interest.

“It is,therefore, my turn now, and they have resolved to re-elect me to the Senate as a ranking senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
