Ekiti pastor ‘kidnaps self’, demands N3m from congregation

Ekiti pastor ‘kidnaps self’, demands N3m from congregation

By Temitope Yakubu

Adewuyi Adegoke, a pastor at Methodist Church, Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti state, has been arrested by the police for allegedly organising his own kidnap.

TheCable gathered that Adegoke had arranged with one Oluwadare Sunday to demand N3 million ransom from his congregation.

He reportedly went into hiding on Sunday evening while there were reports that he was abducted between Esa-Oke in Osun state and Aramoko-Ekiti in Ekiti.

His purported abductors later contacted the church members to demand the ransom, which they insisted must be paid latest by Thursday to prevent the reverend from being killed.

Detectives, however, intercepted the pastor’s accomplice, Sunday, who came to pick up the ransom at Okeyinmi area of Ado-Ekiti, after which he led them to the hotel where the pastor had been hiding.

Detectives reportedly tracked the suspects through the mobile phone that he was using to make contact with the church members.

Amba Asuquo, commissioner of police in Ekiti, confirmed that the command is investigating the incident but refused to disclose the identities of the suspects.

“Yes there is something close to that, but we are still investigating and will come out with the details later,” he told reporters.

When asked if the reverend was among the suspects in custody, Asuquo said, “I know we have some suspects in custody in connection with the incident but I cannot reveal their identities to you now.”

When the news of the reverend’s kidnap broke, several members of his congregation took to social media to solicit support towards his rescue.

On Facebook, one Awoyemi Matthew wrote: “People of GOD. everywhere. please let us raise prayer altars for this vibrant servant of GOD. REV Adewuyi Adegoke, who was kidnapped recently between Ekiti and Osun state.”

Gbajabiamila emerges 9th National Assembly Speaker

At last, the House Majority Leader in the 8th National Assembly has been declared the Speaker of the 9th National Assembly defeating his lone rival, Umar Bago to claim victory.

Gbajabiamila who represents Surulere Federal constituency 1, polled a total of 281 votes to defeat Bago who polled 76 votes.

The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership had adopted Gbajabiamila as its preferred candidate. But Bago had gone ahead to contest for the position, raising fears that an upset might be on the way.

A total of 360 members-elect took part in the voting exercise which kicked off shortly after the conclusion of elections of the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President respectively.

We can hack into any account, withdraw money from it, even if phone is locked- suspect

By Evelyn Usman

Most Nigerians and mobile phone users all over the globe usually lock their phones , thereby making it difficult for anyone to have access to information in them, particularly their account details.

But a suspected telephone hacker who was arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ladipo, Lagos, has revealed that such measure does not prevent him and his likes from gaining access into any bank account if they laid their hands on such phones.

Surprisingly, the 31-year-old suspect, Dare Oladimeji, is a Senior Secondary School Certificate holder.

In this interview with Crime Guard, Oladimeji, a footballer, who just returned from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, having concluded his two years contract with ALAIN FC, said hacking into bank accounts through phones , had nothing to do with being a graduate.

Arrest

Some suspected members of his gang as gathered, had earlier been arrested and charged to court. He was tracked to Idi-Oro area of Lagos, during investigation into the withdrawal of N200,000 from a victim’s account .

Asked if he had any connivance with bank staff, he shook his head, stating rather , that he got the necessary details from Google Chrome.

JAMB’s missing N35m: Court remands woman charged with blaming snake(Opens in a new browser tab)

He boasted that money could be withdrawn from account through stolen sim card, no matter the code used to prevent one from accessing the phone.

Hear him: “I work on sim cards to get money. When I lay my hands on any sim card, I would slot it into any small phone that is not adroid. When that is done, I would press a code which brings out the list of banks the owner of the sim uses.

“For example, if the person is using GTB, I will proceed with the normal code of *37*100#. If the person has money , we would use it to buy recharge card to confirm how much the owner has, through the debit alert that would pop in to reveal the balance. Thereafter, we would transfer the money into donors accounts, from where we would withdraw the money”.

Asked what happens if phone is locked, he said, “ Locking of phones with password does not stop me from hacking into any account, as long as I can lay my hands on the sim card. All I need to do is to remove the sim and slot it into a small phone.

“The only thing that can prevent me from hacking into account through phone is when the SIM card itself is locked. But most people don’t lock their sim cards, they only lock their phones.

You can only beat my likes to the game if you lock your sim card because only the owner knows the password”.

He stated that he resorted to doing such illicit deal after he lost the money he brought from Dubai.

According to him, “ When I came back from Dubai in 2016, I brought N7 million , out of which I gave one Mr Shola N5 million for a genuine business with NUPENG. Unfortunately, the man died .

We pick SIM cards

“ I decided to venture into this business which is a small version of yahoo yahoo because I didn’t want to go into robbery. At Idi-Oro, there are pick pockets . When they snatch phones from victims, they would throw the sim cards away. What I do is to go looking for these sim cards and continue from there.

“Nobody taught me the skill. I learnt it from google chrome. This is just common sense. But I regret my action because I have brought shame to my children”, said the father of three.

The suspect as gathered, would be charged to court soon.

JAMB releases 15,490 withheld results

JAMB releases 15,490 withheld results

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said that it has released the withheld results of 15,490 candidates, who participated at its April 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The board made the disclosure in a statement signed by the board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Monday in Lagos State.

It said that the results released on Saturday were part of the 34,120 it withheld while announcing the release of the results on May 11.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a total of 1,886,508 candidates registered for the examination, including candidates in foreign centres.

Out of this figure, the results of only 1,792,719 candidates were released on May 11.

“JAMB had during the release of the 2019 UTME results on Saturday, May 11, stressed that it would further probe the identity and involvement of some candidates who were suspected of being involved in one examination infraction or the other.

“As a result of this, the board has further cleared and released the results of 15,490 candidates in this category.

“This release follows the expert review of the cases in this category of candidates who were requested to upload certain credentials for scrutiny.

“At the conclusion of the review, these candidates were further classified into five groups,” it said.

It said that the first group were candidates who were sufficiently innocent.

The second was that of candidates with inconclusive evidence of culpability and were given the benefit of the doubt because of the board’s guiding principles, that it was better to let go many criminals than to punish one innocent person.

NAN reports that the board recently released results of candidates earlier cleared of wrongdoings and also conducted fresh examinations in two centres, Abuja and Otuoke in Bayelsa, where it was convinced of a genuine need to examine 490 candidates who had missed the April examination due to communication lapses.

The board said in the statement that candidates whose uploaded evidence necessitated further interrogations had been notified and invited through telephone calls, UTME profiles, SMS and emails to designated centres for further clarification on the evidence against them.

“It is in their interest to attend or such evidence will be taken as conclusive.

“There are also those whose culpability has been firmly established, necessitating cancellation of their results.

According to the board, results of additional 321 candidates have been conclusively cancelled and the affected persons notified.

It said that the other categories of candidates were those who did not heed to advice to upload evidence of their identities vis-a-vis the other impersonators, adding that there was clear evidence of their culpability.

It said that their results had been cancelled.

The board said that four additional centres were discovered to have been involved in examination fraud and had been de-listed by the board.

“The board has endured the pains of this tedious exercise in order to sanitise its processes and ensure that only genuine candidates are enrolled in the country’s tertiary education system.

BREAKING: Buhari assents law declaring June 12 public holiday

By Ismail Mudashir |

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Public Holiday Amendment Act, declaring June 12 of every year a public holiday and Democracy Day.

Presidential aide on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, stated this while briefing State House correspondents on Monday.

He said with the assent to the amendment, May 29 has been removed as a public holiday.

“By the act amended and signed by Mr. President, May 29 is no more a public holiday. June 12 is now a public holiday and the country’s Democracy Day,” he said.

The assent came 48 hours to the celebration of the country’s maiden Democracy Day.

2019 UTME: JAMB, other stakeholders to announce cut-off marks Tuesday

Breaking: JAMB, stakeholders fix cut-off mark for 2019/2020 admission Tuesday

by Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board will meet with stakeholders on Tuesday to decide the cut-off mark for the 2019/2020 admission.

The 2019 Policy Meeting with stakeholder will hold on Tuesday, June 11 at Gbongan, Osun State.

JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Benjamin said the official cut-off marks for the 2019/2020 admission would be made public at the end of the policy meeting.

He advised candidates to disregard any cut-off mark being peddled by fraudsters, describing it as “fake.”

He said: “The clarification became necessary following speculations that the board had fixed the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) cut-off marks.

“It is pertinent to note that the heads of institutions and other stakeholders will do so at a policy meeting which is chaired by the Honourable Minister of Education. The board has scheduled the 2019 Policy Meeting for June 11 at Gbongan, Osun State.”

The board added that candidates should not also believe some rumour that a candidate could have two different results released by the server.

Benjamin also advised candidates to print their admission letter as they may not have been deemed to have been admitted.

Meanwhile, the board said it has successfully secured conviction for fifteen persons who were involved in double registration, examination malpractice and other infractions during the conduct of the UTME.

The board said some of the convictions were secured in Zamfara, Kebbi and other states.
