Ambode mobilises Epe Division for Sanwo-Olu

Ambode mobilises Epe Division for Sanwo-Olu

By Gbenga Salau

Less than a week after a commissioner in Lagos State, Mr. Wale Oluwo, from Epe Division, resigned to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has started mobilising the Division to vote enmasse for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates.
Speaking in Epe at a meeting with APC leaders in the division, Ambode said it was time the people put events before and after APC governorship primary, which produced Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the party’s gubernatorial candidate behind, and unite for the party’s victory.

The governor said it became imperative for him to meet them, so that all members could submit to the party’s decision.

The APC Deputy Governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat thanked Ambode and all leaders in the division, saying the Governor displayed unusual maturity and character, which eloquently confirmed that he is a man with large heart.

Among those that attended the meeting were Hamzat, Senator representing Lagos East at the upper legislative chamber, Gbenga Ashafa; member of House of Representatives representing Epe, Hon Wale Raji; Chief Lanre Razaq, former Speakers – Adeyemi Ikuforiji and Jokotola Pelumi, and Alhaji Akanni Seriki Bamu, among others.

NYSC sanctions Davido for violating service rules

NYSC sanctions Davido for violating service rules

Samson Folarin and Tunde Ajaja

The National Youth Service Corps has sanctioned popular artiste, David Adeleke, aka Davido, for violating camp rules during the mandatory three-week orientation camp, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

Top sources in the NYSC told one of our correspondents that for “absconding” from the camp during the orientation camp, the Corps had to “dekit” the artiste, which brought to an end his participation in the 2018 Batch ‘B’ Stream II in Lagos State, where he had been posted.

The source said, “The NYSC was constrained to “dekit” Davido for violating the rules guiding conduct and activities in the camp. As a matter of fact, he absconded because he was away from the camp without permission. That prompted the Corps to issue him a query which was sent from Abuja. So, he is no longer a serving corps member.”

The artiste, our correspondent gathered, violated many of the scheme’s regulations.

Other NYSC bylaws violated by Davido include bringing vehicles into the orientation camp; disclosing official information; engaging in private practice; taking part in partisan politics and reporting late for duty.

However, it was also gathered that he may be remobilised for the scheme.

While replying to a post on Instagram during the week, the artiste had said that his NYSC programme had been terminated. He later deleted the comment from the post made by a friend.

Meanwhile, Articles 2 and 15 under the Code of Conduct subtitle in the NYSC Bylaws (Revised in 2011) state that every corps member shall not leave orientation camp without the written permission from the state coordinator, and every member shall not bring vehicles or motorcycles into the orientation camp.

The articles, however, stated that any member found guilty of violating these provisions, among other provisions, will be liable to be decamped and sent out of camp.

Section 15 (ii) added, “Any member who brings vehicles or motorcycles to camp shall not be registered, and if already registered, shall be decamped.”

The NYSC Director of Information, Adenike Adeyemi, who told Saturday PUNCH, in a response to an enquiry, that the Corps had communicated with the popular musician over his activities during his service year, however, did not say what punishment had been meted out to him for breaking several bylaws.

Davido’s enrolment for the NYSC had created a stir, as he became the cynosure of all eyes at the Iyana Ipaja, Lagos orientation camp when he arrived for registration in August 2018.

He had also posted pictures of himself in the NYSC kit on Instagram, as other corps members in Batch ‘B’ Stream II swarmed him at the camp. Just afterwards, Davido left the camp and began a series of violation of the rules of the service.

Our correspondent observed from his Instagram page that just after a few days in the camp, he travelled to Boston, Massachusetts, as he embarked on a tour of the United States.

He thereby violated the Section 2 of the bylaw, which says all corps members must participate in all activities in the camp.

It could not be ascertained if he did not violate the second law, which stated that corps members leaving the orientation camp should get the written permission of the state coordinator.

But the Assurance crooner did not stop at Boston, as he also visited Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, Georgia, Minnesota, London, Sao Tome, Accra, Mayotte, Lebanon, UAE, among others.

Davido, within the period, was also actively involved in the electioneering of his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Osun State September 22 election.

For weeks, the artiste shuttled between Lagos State, where he was based, and Osun State, where the election held.

But the NYSC law not only prohibited participation in partisan politics, it also said corps members should not leave their place of primary assignments without the permission of their state coordinators.

Davido’s manager, Asa Asika, declined comment, saying he does not speak to the press.

UNILORIN: Drug addiction, academic failure behind suicide of final year student

The University of Ilorin says the death of Adigun Emmanuel, a final year undergraduate, was caused by drug addiction.

Kunle Akogun, director of corporate affairs of the university, made this known to NAN on Friday.

The late Emmanuel was a student of the faculty of agriculture.

Akogun said he “resorted to the unsavory action to ventilate his frustration over his failure in his final year project”.

“Mr Adigun Emmanuel Adewale of the faculty of agriculture, committed suicide last Thursday, November 29, 2018,” he explained.

He said the university, after investigating the suicide, found that the late Adigun took his life as a result of his “drug addiction”.

The director said the student must have adopted drugs to address the prolonged depression he suffered as a result of personal challenges he could not bear.

“Some close friends of the late Mr. Adigun revealed that the obviously depressed student had unsuccessfully attempted suicide thrice, having publicly expressed profound regrets on many occasions,” he said.

Akogun said the student had complained that it was his younger sister that was sponsoring his education.

He said the late student had lamented that it would be too difficult for him to approach the same younger female sibling for the needed finances to complete his extended stay on campus.

The university spokesman added that the deceased has a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.72 and failed results in seven different courses.

He said the performance accounted for late Adigun’s non-graduation in the last academic session.

Akogun said the deceased was neither considered academically outstanding nor on the verge of completing any research project.

“He took his life while he was expected to complete registration formalities, a prerequisite for his retake of all the courses he had earlier failed,” he said.

According to him, a senior academic staff of the deceased’s department of agronomy got wind of Adigun’s psychological problem through their interactions.

Akogun said: “His alleged drug addiction, courtesy of peer group influence, frustrated all the rehabilitative assistances that were rendered to him to the awareness, admiration and appreciation of his family members.”

He explained that some of the measures taken by the university management to soothe the nerves of the deceased included a four-week intensive rehabilitation at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, (UITH).

“Other assistance includes the facilitation of hostel accommodation for him on campus through the recommendation of the dean of the faculty of agriculture, Prof. Gbadebo Olaoye, and a soft loan granted him,” he added.

Reps approve June 12 as Democracy Day

UPDATED: Reps approve June 12 as Democracy Day

Bashorun Moshood Olawale Abiola

Leke Baiyewu, Abuja

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved that June 12 be marked as Democracy Day in Nigeria. The current date, May 29, was deleted from the Public Holidays Act and replaced with the new date.

The presidential election acclaimed to be the freest and fairest in the country’s history was held on June 12, 1993, but the results were annulled by the then military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

The approval followed the adoption of a report on by the Committee of the Whole a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.

The bill was entitled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Amend the Public Holidays Act, Cap. P40 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to bring the Act in tandem with the current realities and exigencies of the modern times and to declare June, 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria and for Related Matters.’

It was sponsored by Messrs Edward Pwajok and Kayode Oladele.

Considering the report at the plenary on Thursday, the lawmakers approved three amended clauses ‎in the Act, as recommended in the report.

One of the clauses deleted May 29 as Democracy Day and replaced the date with June 12.

President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier in June announced that the nation’s Democracy Day would henceforth hold on June 12 of every year, as against the current arrangement where the ceremony holds on May 29.

Lagos commissioner resigns, dumps APC for PDP

Lagos commissioner, Wale Oluwo resigns

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode

DUMPS APC FOR PDP TO WORK FOR AGBAJE’S VICTORY

Bola Badmus – Lagos

LAGOS State Commissioner for Energy Resources, Mr Wale Oluwo
FOLLOWING his disavowal of the way and manner by which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) conducted its gubernatorial primary and consequently denied the incumbent, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, a second term ticket, the state Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Olawale Oluwo, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect.

Besides, Oluwo also resigned his party membership in a letter he wrote the state chairman of APC, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, while in another message made available to newsmen, the commissioner announced his defection to the leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with a promise to work for victory of its gubernatorial candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, who he described as his friend.

The commissioner, in the letter he penned to the APC chairman in the state, disclosed that he had earlier in the day submitted his resignation letter with the state governor, Mr Ambode, while he took a swipe at the party concerning the way and manner it handled the last October primary exercise, which he said was in violation of the party’s guidelines.

According to him, the way the exercise was held showed that principles of merit, competence, justice and fairness had been sacrificed by the APC on the altar of political expediency, adding that the integrity deficient nature of the primary had significantly diminished the hard-earned reputation of Lagos as a reference point for free and fair democratic practice.

Oluwo equally lamented what he described as the indifference of the APC as a party to the “continued use an arm of government by a powerful group within the party to intimidate critical institutions of democracy in the state, undermines the doctrine of separation of powers, creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and impairs government’s ability to implement policies and programmes that will benefit the majority of the people.”

This, he said was in conflict with his strongly held belief that group interest, no matter how powerful, must be subordinated to the interest of the majority.

Text of the letter to the Chairman, Lagos chapter of APC, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun reads:

“A few hours ago, I submitted to His Excellency, the governor of Lagos State, a letter of resignation of my appointment as the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources. Consequently, as a registered member of All Progressives Congress. I have deemed it necessary to notify you of my intention to reconsider my membership status.

“My decision to resign is not unconnected with the event of the last few weeks, which have created a heavy moral burden for me. I have found it rather difficult to come to terms or rationalize the party’s conduct of the October 2018 primary elections, which were largely characterised by massive voter disenfranchisement, intimidation, violence, undue influence and non- compliance with all known principle of democracy. In the particular case of the gubernatorial primary which was conducted using the ‘open ballot’ option in violation of the guidelines of the APC that specified the ‘open secret ballot’ option, it is clear to me that the core principles of merit, competence, justice and fairness have been sacrificed by the APC on the alter of political expediency.

“The integrity sufficient nature of the primary has significantly diminished the hard earned reputation of our state as a reference point for free and fair democratic practice. I have struggled for weeks to understand the rationale for the apparent desperation and brigandage brazenly displayed by the party apparatchic in the various elections. I had never thought such a vicious attack could be unleashed on the progress that the State had made in its steady democratic journey.

“The indifference of the APC to the continued use of an arm of government by a powerful group within the party, to intimidate critical institutions of democracy in the state, undermines the doctrine of separation of powers, creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and impairs government’s ability to implement policies and programmes that will benefit the majority of the people. The is in conflict with my strongly held belief that group interest, no matter how powerful, must be subordinated to the interest of the majority.

“I am convinced that the present atmosphere of encircument will not abate anytime soon. I therefore resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress, immediately.”

Nigerian Tribune learnt that Oluwo, believed to be one of the trusted hands of Governor Ambode, had wanted to resign his appointment in October, just a few days after the party primary, which he contested did not follow laid down rules and regulations but was persuaded from doing so by the governor.

It was learnt that Oluwo was at one time in the past the PDP candidate for House of Reps seat in Epe area of the State.
