Tony Momoh: A Renaissance man turns 80

By Mack Ogbamosa

In the annals of professionalism, only a few people have been able to successfully combine many disciplines. Prince Tony Momoh, who is now 80 years old, is one of them.

He has made giant strides not only as a journalist but also as a lawyer, teacher, writer and politician.

In fact, many of us in the journalism profession who had the opportunity to work closely with him in the old DAILY TIMES in our younger days were told by our older colleagues not to dare argue with him as such an exercise would end in futility. We were told that whenever you started any argument with him on any subject and you appeared to be having an upper hand, he would switch to another subject. For instance, if you were discussing politics, he would change to philosophy. Those among us who had no courage did not get near him for fear of being thrown into CONFUSION But the courageous ones stayed close to him and discovered that he was and still a RENAISSANCE MAN : A man of many parts.

This is a man who decided early in his journalism career to arm himself with degrees in mass communication and law. In fact, he was the first Nigerian to do so. This is after he had attained the position of a headmaster in teaching.

While at the DAILY TIMES, where he worked for many years, he became the first and only journalist to assume the position of the Editor of the paper through examination.

He was also the first editor to take the National Assembly to Court over the issue of disclosure of his source of information. He won that case as the Court ruled that a journalist had the right not to disclose his or her source of information.

As Minister of Information and Culture, he was the first and only minister to write “Letters to my Countrymen ” explaining the philosophy behind the policies and programmes of the military government of President Ibrahim Babaginda at that time. Even though many Nigerians did not buy into some of the programmmes especially the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the administration, that did not deter him from writing his letters.

His foray into politics was dramatic. First as a professional in politics and later a full-blown politician.

One of his major achievements as a politician is the masterminding of the merger of three main political parties -Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) with a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New Peoples’ Democratic Party (N-PDP) to form the All Progressive Congress (APC) Which defeated the incumbent government of President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP, thereby ushering in President Muhammadu Buhari as the nation’s leader in 2015. He had earlier in 2011, assumed the position of the national Chairman of the CPC, thereby surpassing the achievements of his idol as a young man – the late Chief Anthony Enahoro. It was because of his admiration for Enahoro that he decided to change his name from Suleiman to Anthony.

Although, a loyal party man , Momoh as a politician has found himself working closely with individual politicians as a result of their character rather than the political parties they belong to. Thus, in all his political career since 1998, he has professionally handled the media and publicity campaign of only two politicians – Dr. Alex Ekwueme and President Muhammadu Buhari.

He has been supporting the President since 2003 when Buhari first decided to contest for the highest office in the land. This, he did against popular opinion from many of his friends and relatives who WARNED him that Buhari can never win election as president in the country

Born on April 27, 1939 as the 165th child of king Momoh the First of Auchi Kingdom, Etsako West Local Government, Edo State, Momoh attended Government School, Auchi (1949- 1954) and Anglican School, Ubuneke, Ivbiaro, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State (1954). He later became Headmaster of Anglican School (1958- 1959) after teaching in the school for a while. Afterwards, he proceeded to Provincial Teachers College, Abudu, Edo and Government Teachers College, Abraka, Delta State (1960- 1961). He starred his journalism career in the DAILY TIMES as a trainee Sub Edior in 1962. He went on study leave to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to read mass communication and completed the course at the University of Lagos because of the Civil war in the country at that time.

He later studied law at the University of Lagos and was Called to Bar in 1975 after attending the Lagos Law School (1974- 1975).

He occupied various editorial and administrative positions in the DAILY TIMES before he was appointed Minister of Information and Culture in 1986. He was one time Secretary and later President, Nigerian Guild of Editors, Chairman, National Registration Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and also, at a time served on the Board of the Nigeria Airways. He is a fellow of the Commonwealth Journalists Association. He is currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Plateau State.

Momoh is married to Janet and the union is blessed with four children.

I’m wiser now – Ambode

I’m wiser now – Ambode

Oladeinde Olawoyin

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said that having spent almost four years running the affairs of Lagos, he is “wiser” now.

Mr Ambode said this while fielding questions from state house correspondents during his visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

The governor said he visited Abuja on behalf of Lagosians to appreciate Mr Buhari for inaugurating some of the projects in the state.

When asked about what lessons he has learnt as a politician in Lagos, the governor said he has learnt a lot of things which has shaped his identity as someone who came into government as a “technocrat”.

“You see, every politician learns every day,” the governor said.

“The fact remains that I came in as a technocrat, so I used to call myself a techno-politician. But I think I am wiser now. I am more of a politician than a technocrat.”

Failed Ambition
Mr Ambode lost his bid to seek re-election on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) last year after the party leadership stood against him. He was replaced by Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a primary election characterised by name-calling and bitter rivalry.

Mr Sanwo-Olu would later emerge the governor-elect of Lagos after beating Jimi Agbaje of the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking about his legacy in the state, Mr Ambode said he has touched “humanity” with his policies and programme as Lagos governor.

He said: “In another 16 days or so, we will be leaving office. But what is important is that I was able to have that opportunity to be elected as governor of Lagos State and to touch humanity in a way that I deem it fit.

“We did our best and most importantly the projects we did were people friendly and people central. I just think a lot more people have enjoyed the benefits and dividends of democracy than we actually met it. And that gives me joy that we were able to touch lives.

“Wherever you find yourself just make (a) positive difference to people and Nigerians, that is the whole essence of service. I’m grateful that I had that opportunity.”

Mr Ambode’s loss last September makes him the first governor to lose re-election in Lagos since 1999. Two former governors of the state had governed for eight years before Mr Ambode emerged in 2015.

While Bola Tinubu, a leader in the APC, governed between 1999 and 2007, Babatunde Fashola, Nigeria’s minister of power, works and housing, governed between 2007 and 2015.

Some signs of cancer you must not ignore

Some signs of cancer you must not ignore

Dr. Sylvester Ikhisemojie

Around the world today, there is a steady rise in the incidence of cancer. It cuts across all age groups and nobody has immunity to developing it in any form. However, in a previous essay on this page, we saw evidence that indicated that cancer cells develop all the time but that certain factors within our bodies prevent them from developing further to cause disease. We also saw that for those people in whom diseases develop, this intricate form of self-regulation fails and the cancer is able to grow. However, the period of such growth takes a minimum of 10 to 15 years before it manifests as a disease. In children, it would mean that the elements which make the development of cancer possible began even while they were still in the womb.

One of the most common early features of cancer is the presence of a growth. Such a growth can occur anywhere in the body and many people would describe it as a lump. Besides its formation, the lump would show evidence of progressive growth. This is the story in breast cancer, bone cancer, kidney cancer and cancer of the ovary. Some of these lumps are obvious as should be clear above and others are not so easy to feel.

However, those lumps which cannot readily be felt would demonstrate certain types of discomfort as a result of the pressure they exert on surrounding structures. It is these pressure effects that doctors analyze to make a diagnosis in many cases right up to itemising what types of investigations to undergo and where these tests should be done. It is therefore important that any lump seen anywhere in the body must not be ignored and should be properly evaluated.

Another factor is sudden and unexplained weight loss. When such weight loss occurs, and it is unplanned and progressive, something must be seriously wrong. It then becomes the responsibility of that person to seek answers by visiting their doctor and having a comprehensive investigation done. Usually, the cause becomes apparent after routine screening for several other disease conditions that are known to cause dramatic weight loss have been eliminated. Many of these tests can be performed fairly quickly, often within days and a clear pathway to the real problem then becomes evident.

Pain is another feature of this range of diseases that often points to the possible cause. When pain is dull, persistent and unrelenting in the absence of some fairly obvious cause, it is time to consider the possibility that cancer might be the cause. Sometimes, such pain would respond to simple painkillers at the initial stages. As time goes on, such treatment options fail and the strength of the analgesic will need to be scaled up in a careful calibration with the intensity of pain. At the terminal stages, relief is not obtained from pain unless such options as opioids and codeine are included in the medications used.

Weakness is a feature of this condition as well. There is a dramatic reduction in energy levels caused by the growth of cancer. The disease produces this by several mechanisms. First, it competes with healthy cells of the body for nutrients. In doing so, those tissues are prevented from getting an optimum supply of nutrients from the diet and weakness results.

Another mechanism cancer employs to cause weakness is by producing a substance that suppresses appetite. Sufferers often have no inclination to eat anything and slow, progressive weakness is the result. In some cases, no medication offered can reverse this situation and the people then progressively become dependent on others around them.

One other feature produced by this condition is cough. Cancer developing within the abdomen can grow to rub against the diaphragm and cause the person to cough. Any cancer within that body space which produces daughter call or growths that attach to the diaphragm will produce a similar effect. As expected, any cancer developing within the chest would cause a similar kind of irritation that would cause a person to cough. Such cough is often dry, irritating and may be associated with chest and back pain.

Sometimes, blood may be coughed up as well. The blood is often fresh, may have clots in it and can be progressively worse in tandem with the progression of the disease. Many people will not go to the hospital unless they are bleeding from somewhere or they cannot eat or are not able to pass stool. For many patients, therefore, the appearance of blood in streaks or clots with the coughing is the impetus they need to visit the hospital.

A change in bowel habits often spells trouble. The stools become thinner than usual and may now have the dimensions of a pencil. Their passage could also become far between, not to mention a frankly irregular and unpredictable pattern. As time passes, there may be blood as well in the stool and later still, the stools stop being passed completely. In the beginning, the stool may be passed in a watery or loose form after several days of constipation. This does not happen as a result of changes in diet but as a functional problem brought about by changes in the caliber of the intestine.

Feeding amongst cancer patients takes different patterns. We have seen above how the proteins secreted by the cancer cells suppress the appetite. The other change we can see with feeding is the situation of early satiety; a situation in which such a person takes a few spoonfuls of food and becomes satisfied. This is frequently seen in cancer of the stomach. Here, the growing lump within the stomach is responsible for taking up a lot of space and it therefore competes for that space with the food the person eats. In this case, the growing mass often wins and the person, who is now full all the time, gets satisfied with only a small amount of food. The calories obtained from such food are insufficient to maintain the normal body size and weight loss results.

When cancer develops, anaemia follows sooner or later. This happens for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the reducing ability to feed. Other reasons are due to intermittent bleeding, destruction of blood cells and fierce competition from the cancer cells for the body’s nutrients. With the passage of time, the severity of anaemia is often a reflection of the duration of the illness. Frequently, blood transfusion is undertaken at intervals to preserve some quality of life. In a steady state, long before things degenerate to the point of blood transfusion, blood tonics prescribed by a doctor are often the mainstay of maintaining healthy blood counts.

To have a fever is often a sign that you have an infection. Usually, such a fever ought to go away with the relevant treatment. If it fails to do so however, and it becomes persistent instead, it could be a sign that there is a cancer to contend with. The same is true of swollen lymph nodes which are seen in the groins, the armpits and around the neck. In most circumstances, those swellings come and go often in response to an infection. When they fail to resolve with treatment, it is time to worry about something else.

Police arrest six people with truckload of poisonous ‘ponmo’

Police arrest six people with truckload of poisonous ‘ponmo’

Policemen attached to the Lagos State Police Command have arrested six suspects in possession of poisonous cow skin (ponmo).

The spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday in Lagos that the suspects were arrested following a police tip-off.

“On May 5, at about 5 a.m, acting on the strength of information from a credible source that a truckload of cow skins, popularly called ‘ponmo’, suspected to be poisonous were heaped in a warehouse at No. 9, College Road, Igando.

“A team of Police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer Igando, mobilised to the scene.

“The huge pillage and pyramid of poisonous ponmo and the chemicals used in the preservation of the cow skins were recovered.

“One TATA Truck with registration number AKD-375-XB which was used in conveying the goods was impounded

“Officials of Lagos State Ministry of Health were contacted and after due examination, the cow skins were confirmed to be poisonous and not fit for human consumption.

“Six suspects Adelowo Yinka 50, Olawumi Onabanjo 40, Omowumi Wasiu 43, Adeshokan Taiwo 43, Iyabo Oluwa 38 and Taye Kazeem 40yrs were arrested in connection with the case.’’

According to Mr Elkana, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State Command, Zubairu Muazu, assured Lagosians that the Command will continue to protect life and property of the people.

Mr Muazu also assured that the command would ensure the preservation of public health and safety as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source and destinations of those poisonous food items, and suspects will be charged to court.’’ he said. (NAN)

Buhari returns to Abuja after ‘private visit’ to UK

JUST IN: Buhari returns to Abuja after ‘private visit’ to UK

Sani Tukur

President Muhammadu Buhari Sunday returned to Abuja, after a 10-day ‘private visit’ to the United Kingdom.

The president’s jet touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 6:24 p.m.

A statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said some “reckless online media, irresponsible political opposition, and other bilious groups and individuals, had gone on overdrive since the President left the country on April 25, insinuating that he was going for hospitalization, and would not return after 10 days as stated.”

Mr Adesisna also said in their “vain imaginations, they even stated that fictive doctors have advised President Buhari to stay longer for more intensive care”.

He said now that the president has returned, “can these apostles of evil imaginings swallow their words? Can they retract their tendentious stories as well as press statements, and apologize to millions of Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora that they have fed with hogwash?

“Few days after the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, we daresay that this valuable freedom does not tantamount to liberty to mislead and hoodwink the populace through concocted and jejune publications.

“The Buhari administration will always respect and uphold press freedom, but the onus lies on those prone to passing off fiction as facts, to remember that freedom demands concomitant responsibility.

“Those who further share and disseminate falsehood are also encouraged to embrace responsible conduct,” he said.

The presidency did not provide details of Mr Buhari’s ‘private visit,’ leading to speculations he travelled to see his doctors as he has done in the past.

Mr Buhari did not also transfer power to his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, while he was away’ an action that drew more controversy.

Woman accuses Alfa husband of destroying children’s health with Indian hemp

Woman accuses Alfa husband of destroying children’s health with Indian hemp

Afeez Hanafi

The wife of an Islamic cleric in Ibafo, Ogun State, Mrs Aina Larubawa, has raised the alarm over the health conditions of their kids who are inhaling the smoke of Indian hemp allegedly puffed by the cleric, Isau Larubawa.

The mother of five children lamented that she had been spending money to treat two of the children – Ajoke, 10 and seven-year-old Fatimoh – who are battling eye problem reportedly caused by the smoke.

She stated that all her efforts to prevail on her husband, who is in his 70s, to stop the habit of smoke far away from the house had proved abortive.

The family lives in a two bedroomed apartment.

Aina, who sells clothes, told City Round that Alfa asked her to bear with the situation or relocate elsewhere with the children.

The native of Oyo State said apart from the negative effects of the smoking, she had endured tough moments ranging from physical assault to lack of care for their children.

She recalled, “I have been in these problems seven months after we got married 24 years ago. I caught him smoking when my first pregnancy was five months. We were living at a boys’ quarter in Mowe then. I wouldn’t have married him if I knew he is a smoker. He said he intentionally hid it from me and that I could do my worse.

“I tried to abort the pregnancy to no avail. He beat me while I was pregnant. I didn’t want to divorce him because this is my second marriage. I remarried after my former husband, for whom I have a child, died. I don’t want people to be insulting me of moving from one matrimonial home to another. It was my sister who persuaded me to marry Alfa Larubawa because her husband and Alfa are childhood friends.

“There are a lot of issues but the most pressing one is Alfa’s smoking habit. I have been spending a lot of money to treat my two children because the smoke affects their eyes. About three years ago, some health workers came to our community to do free medical test for residents. They said my children and I had dirty substances logged in our chests. They advised us to move away from smoke, warning that it would affect our kidneys in the long run.

“I called Alfa and told him about the medical advice. I pleaded with him to stop smoking or do it outside for the sake of our children’s health. I showed him their eyes. We don’t use coal pots for cooking which could have caused the dirt in our chests. He said he had been smoking for a long time and he could not stop it. He said if I was not satisfied, I should leave home with my children.”

The 46-year-old woman stated further that she had been solely responsible for the upkeep of their children, adding that two of them had stopped going to school because she could no longer pay their school fees.

She disclosed that at the height of the serial assaults Alfa allegedly subjected her to, he threatened to kill her and the children under the pretext that he had run mad.

“That was when I started arming myself with a cutlass at night to defend myself and my children. I hardly sleep at night. I would have run away but I didn’t have the means to rent an apartment where I could take my children to,” Aina added, sounding betrayed and helpless.

She went on, “I was selling kerosene and bread while we were in a rented apartment. It was the money I realised from the business and some loans I took that we used to build our house in 2007. I am still repaying the loans. He only bought the land.

“I thought of using my money to build my own house but I felt it was not wise doing so when my husband had not built his own. I thought I would win his heart by assisting him. The building document is in his name.”

Our correspondent learnt that Alfa had initially reported his wife to a human rights group in Ibafo, One Love for Peace and Unity Foundation, claiming that she was threatening him with a cutlass.

The group was said to have invited the couple and their relations to a meeting recently during which Alfa’s excesses were unravelled.

Alfa’s childhood friend, who facilitated the couple’s marriage, Alhaji Arasi Lawal, testified to some of the allegations against the cleric in a video clip recorded at the meeting.

Lawal said, “Alfa Larubawa is my childhood friend. We have been friends since 1969 when we were bachelors. His first wife was my late sister. They have five children together. At a point, he complained to me that my sister was unkempt nd he would divorce her if she failed to change. I talked to my sister, but he eventually divorced her.

“I have warned him to stop smoking. He is only disgracing himself. He does not take care of his children. I am happy that this case is here (human rights group). I see him as somebody who is following the devil.”

The President of the foundation, Samuel Adegeye (aka Black Moses), said the group had written a petition to the Ibafo Police Station, urging them to wade into the matter.

He added, “I am also begging Nigerians to come to the aid of this woman and her children before something bad happens.”

Our correspondent contacted the cleric on the telephone on Friday to get his comments on the allegations. When asked to react to the allegation that he took Indian hemp, he went berserk, raining curses on the wife and ended the call.

He did not pick the subsequent calls our correspondent made to his line.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, promised to contact the Ibafo Police Division on the case and get back to our correspondent with comments, but he had yet to do so as of press time.

Harness diversity for nation’s benefits, Nigerians admonished

Harness diversity for nation’s benefits, Nigerians admonished
An appeal has gone to Nigerians and Muslims in particular to harness the benefits of the nation’s diversity rather than using it for divisive tendencies.
This was the recommendation of participants at the 25th Pre-Ramadan lecture of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) held at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium of the University of Lagos at the weekend.
Delivering the keynote address, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, said diversity is a deliberate creation of Allah.
Quoting from the Quran chapter 30 verse 22, the Sultan said ‘And His sign is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your tongues and colours. Indeed, there are signs in this for the wise’.
“Islam recognises reality of diversity. It accepts it and rises above it to show that what matter is not race which is geographical or colour which is skin deep, but the quality of human character. That the human bein”g is defined by where he comes from or what language he speaks or even what social class he comes from… rather what he believes in and what values drive his character and behaviour. The criterion with the Creator is simply taqwah, God-consciousness which translates to the quality of character and behaviour towards his fellow human beings in general and Muslim brothers in particular”, the Sultan declared.

‘Muslims more than any other group are most equipped to deal with diversity. If they should be found wanting, It would not be because of their religion, but because of their ignorance of their religion’, he added.
One of the guest speakers, Professor Abdul Razaq Abdul Majeed Alaro of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, said diversity is a plan of Allah which we cannot live without. We just have to manage it.
He said the solution to Nigeria’s problems doesn’t lie in going our separate ways, but learning to use our diversity for our benefits.
He also deplored lack of alternative dispute resolution mechanism based on faith or culture, saying the litigation process is based on rights while alternative dispute resolution mechanism emphasises interest.
He also called for reform of the National Youth Service scheme to enable it perform the integration process it was designed for.
The second speaker, Dr Lukman Zakariyah of the International Islamic University, Malaysia, emphasises the need for compromise, saying there is more that unite us than what we different on.
He also called for return to our value system
The occasion also witness presentation of scholarship award to ten scholars.
The national President of the association, Alhaji Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, lamented that religion which is supposed to be used to unite has been manipulated for political and other sinister purposes.
He, however, expressed confidence in ability of Islam to offer hope for solutions to most of the problems.
