Tony Momoh: A Renaissance man turns 80

TONY MOMOH: A RENAISSANCE MAN TURNS 80

By Mack Ogbamosa

In the annals of professionalism, only a few people have been able to successfully combine many disciplines. Prince Tony Momoh, who is now 80 years old, is one of them.

He has made giant strides not only as a journalist but also as a lawyer, teacher, writer and politician.

In fact, many of us in the journalism profession who had the opportunity to work closely with him in the old DAILY TIMES in our younger days were told by our older colleagues not to dare argue with him as such an exercise would end in futility. We were told that whenever you started any argument with him on any subject and you appeared to be having an upper hand, he would switch to another subject. For instance, if you were discussing politics, he would change to philosophy. Those among us who had no courage did not get near him for fear of being thrown into CONFUSION But the courageous ones stayed close to him and discovered that he was and still a RENAISSANCE MAN : A man of many parts.

This is a man who decided early in his journalism career to arm himself with degrees in mass communication and law. In fact, he was the first Nigerian to do so. This is after he had attained the position of a headmaster in teaching.

While at the DAILY TIMES, where he worked for many years, he became the first and only journalist to assume the position of the Editor of the paper through examination.

He was also the first editor to take the National Assembly to Court over the issue of disclosure of his source of information. He won that case as the Court ruled that a journalist had the right not to disclose his or her source of information.

As Minister of Information and Culture, he was the first and only minister to write “Letters to my Countrymen ” explaining the philosophy behind the policies and programmes of the military government of President Ibrahim Babaginda at that time. Even though many Nigerians did not buy into some of the programmmes especially the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the administration, that did not deter him from writing his letters.

His foray into politics was dramatic. First as a professional in politics and later a full-blown politician.

One of his major achievements as a politician is the masterminding of the merger of three main political parties -Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) with a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New Peoples’ Democratic Party (N-PDP) to form the All Progressive Congress (APC) Which defeated the incumbent government of President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP, thereby ushering in President Muhammadu Buhari as the nation’s leader in 2015. He had earlier in 2011, assumed the position of the national Chairman of the CPC, thereby surpassing the achievements of his idol as a young man – the late Chief Anthony Enahoro. It was because of his admiration for Enahoro that he decided to change his name from Suleiman to Anthony.

Although, a loyal party man , Momoh as a politician has found himself working closely with individual politicians as a result of their character rather than the political parties they belong to. Thus, in all his political career since 1998, he has professionally handled the media and publicity campaign of only two politicians – Dr. Alex Ekwueme and President Muhammadu Buhari.

He has been supporting the President since 2003 when Buhari first decided to contest for the highest office in the land. This, he did against popular opinion from many of his friends and relatives who WARNED him that Buhari can never win election as president in the country

Born on April 27, 1939 as the 165th child of king Momoh the First of Auchi Kingdom, Etsako West Local Government, Edo State, Momoh attended Government School, Auchi (1949- 1954) and Anglican School, Ubuneke, Ivbiaro, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State (1954). He later became Headmaster of Anglican School (1958- 1959) after teaching in the school for a while. Afterwards, he proceeded to Provincial Teachers College, Abudu, Edo and Government Teachers College, Abraka, Delta State (1960- 1961). He starred his journalism career in the DAILY TIMES as a trainee Sub Edior in 1962. He went on study leave to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to read mass communication and completed the course at the University of Lagos because of the Civil war in the country at that time.

He later studied law at the University of Lagos and was Called to Bar in 1975 after attending the Lagos Law School (1974- 1975).

He occupied various editorial and administrative positions in the DAILY TIMES before he was appointed Minister of Information and Culture in 1986. He was one time Secretary and later President, Nigerian Guild of Editors, Chairman, National Registration Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and also, at a time served on the Board of the Nigeria Airways. He is a fellow of the Commonwealth Journalists Association. He is currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Plateau State.

Momoh is married to Janet and the union is blessed with four children.

Mack Ogbamosa ,a Lawyer/ journalist wrote from Lagos.

2019 UTME: Over 1.3 million candidates have accessed results so far — JAMB

2019 UTME: Over 1.3 million candidates have accessed results so far — JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says over 1.3 million candidates have so far accessed their results using the result checker (code), 55019.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Benjamin was speaking against the backdrop of claims in some quarters that majority of candidates who participated at the board’s 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) had yet to access their results through the said code.

He also described as untrue, claims by some mischief makers that the N50 charges incurred through the code was going to the board’s purse.

“I want to refute all these claims as there is no truth in them.

“First and foremost, by our records, over 1.3 candidates who sat for this examination have accessed their results using the code for checking the results, which remains ‘55019’.

“Again, let me also state in clear terms that the N50 charged in the process of checking these results does not go to JAMB’s purse but to the various service providers,” Benjamin said.

According to the spokesman, the clarification became necessary in view of what he described as ‘wicked and malicious rumours’ by some persons that the board is charging a fee for checking of results.

Giving a breakdown of the total number of results checked by candidates through the various network providers, Benjamin noted that MTN had the highest, with a total of 888,598, followed by Glo, with a total of 190,923.

He said that coming third was Airtel, with a total of 104, 970 candidates who have so far accessed their result using the network.

Benjamin said that before now, Airtel had some technical hitches, but thankfully, all such challenges had been addressed.

Speaking further, he noted that a total of 62,170 candidates had also accessed their results using the 9mobile service provider.

The spokesman said the board appreciated the concern of those candidates who had challenges accessing their results, and expressed the board’s sincere apologies to the development.

He noted that the board was partnering with the network providers in ensuring quality service in an attempt to forestall such occurrences in its subsequent examinations.

Benjamin said that already, plans were already in place to forward the results to candidates’ profiles for viewing and printing.

NAN reports that results for 2019 UTME were released on Saturday, May 11.

Over 1.8 million candidates registered for the examination. (NAN)

How to make your bank refund money wrongly deducted

How to make your bank reverse your money

by Praise Olowe

Banks are institutions that help you keep your money and facilitate other financial transactions.

These transactions happen smoothly and with no issues. However, there are times when the bank fails in its service to you. It can be very annoying when bank customers experience such issues as unfair or unexplained charges, poor customer service by bank staff, unauthorised transactions on customer accounts through bank transfers or ATM withdrawals, etc.

It is even more frustrating when customers lodge complaint and nothing is done about it.

If you are having challenges sorting out one problem or the other with your bank or any financial institution, bellow are detailed steps you should follow as regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The first and most important step to take is to contact the bank through the quickest channels available. You can reach them on the customer care numbers available or on Social Media.

However, if the result is not satisfactory, you are advised to visit the bank yourself and lay the complaints.

It is also important to note the details of the communication e.g. if a phone call, take down details of when you called, who you spoke to, what you said, and the response you received. All phone calls are recorded so this can easily be reviewed if there are issues later.

Allow two weeks (it might be less in some banks) for the issue to be resolved.

If after lodging your complaint, your Bank still fails to engage you and resolve the complaint within two weeks as provided for in the ATM HELP DESK Circular, you have the right to escalate your complaint to the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) of the CBN.

Read Also: ‘Banks should not joke with cybersecurity’
You can only direct your Complaints to CPD upon the failure of your Bank/Financial Institution to resolve your complaint within the 2 weeks timeline given by the CBN.

You can contact the CPD through the following channels:
E-mail: cpd@cbn.gov.ng
Letter: Director, Consumer Protection Department
Central Business District, Abuja
Your letter of Complaint should be addressed to the Director, Consumer Protection Department. You can submit your letter at the CBN Head Office or at any of the Central Bank of Nigeria branches of nationwide.

The CBN deals with all financial related complaints so far as it is against Financial Institutions within its regulatory purview. How to Write an Effective Complaints Letter

How to write an effective complaints letter

Your complaint, according to the CBN, should be clear and concise to avoid ambiguity. The Complaint letter (petition) should contain amongst other things the following:
• Name, Address, Contact Phone Number & E-mail of the Complainant;
• Name of your Financial Institution;
• Personal banking details ( Do not include PIN & Passwords)
• History/Date of the transaction in dispute;
• Amount claimed (if any);
• Attach relevant documents to support your claim and;
• Evidence to show that you have first lodged the complaint at your bank.

The CBN noted that consumer protection was a critical requirement for financial system stability and an indispensable component for effective regulatory and supervisory framework.

I actually aimed to score 370, Ekene, UTME 2019 best candidate declares

I targeted 370, says Ekene, UTME best candidate

by Shehu Bello

When he was preparing for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Ekene Franklin Ezeunala said his target was to make a score of 370 out of a possible 400.

The SS3 pupil of Meiran Community Secondary School, Meiran, Lagos, made 347 – and he is still happy with himself.

“I tried to make a good score while preparing for the examination.

“The score I was targeting was 370. I still feel happy that I still achieved a good result,” said the public school pupil.

Ekene, who will turn 15 in 13 days (May 27), said he was shocked to be announced the candidate with the highest score in the examination.

“When I first heard I was the highest, I was a bit shocked. But I became glad and happy.”

The teenager said regular participation in competitions on behalf of Lagos State helped his preparations.

“The competitions impacted positively on my preparation. Some of the subjects I did I had done them in preparing for the competitions and met the same thing in the exams,” he said.

Ekene wants to study Chemical Engineering in the university – for the love of it and to impact the society.

He said he was already working on some bio-fuel research to reduce carbon emissions in Nigeria.

“I want to study Chemical Engineering because I feel that chemistry and technology can impact the general public and society in various ways; and personally, I have a flair for chemistry,” he said.

Ekene’s mother, Mrs. Chinelo Ezeunala, a Chemistry teacher at Hightree College, a private school in Berger, Lagos, said she was happy about her son’s feat.

The Chemistry graduate said her son has always shown brilliance in his education and as a result skipped some classes in primary school.

“He started school early at two years plus because I was serving when I had him.

“He attended Philthel Primary School, Akoka. The school was owned by a professor teaching at the University of Lagos. But the woman is late now.

“In primary school he was very bright so he was promoted twice that was why he is 14 years in SS3,” she said.

Mrs. Ezeunala learnt of a scholarship offer by Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State from this reporter.

When asked if she would allow the boy to go, she said it would be discussed as a family.

She said the family was not buoyant enough to afford private university fees if the offer was not a full scholarship.

She said her husband was a retired staff of the defunct NITEL where he worked as a technician and had experienced hard luck in his efforts at running businesses.

She said: “We are not really well off and we cannot afford private university fees. If it is full scholarship, my opinion is ‘why not?’”

Menace of WhatsApp Broadcast Pranks

Menace of WhatsApp Broadcast Pranks

by Demola Adefajo

There is no doubt about it, the WhatsApp and other social media have revolutionised our knowledge base. WhatsApp has enabled us keep in regular contact with friends, co-workers and family at minimal cost. However, it has come with its own negative baggage.

As a regular or occasional user of WhatsApp and other social media you must have come across some messages which you believe to be true and you decide to send to your friends and groups only to discover that they are untrue! It is also possible that you have identified some of your contacts who are always sharing messages which almost always prove to be hoaxes. In fact, I have a contact whose name I have changed to Alarmist because of her penchant for sending alarming messages which almost always prove to be untrue.

I have identified different categories of these messages based on their motives. They are those I call Marketers. They are designed to extol the virtue of some particular products which they claim can do a lot of magic. One of such is a broadcast recently recommending use of hand sanitisers to prevent sexually transmitted infections! We also have one advertising coconut oil as a cure for cancer.

The second category are those I tag demarketers. The broad objective is to malign some products. This category of broadcasts comes out with outlandish claims meant to malign such products. Victims of this type of broadcasts include Coca Cola, Paracetamol, Crunchy Biscuits, Dew Water, fruits etc. They come out with claims that a large number of people have died in a particular country after consuming the product! A cursory search on Google would expose the deceit. They however bank on the fact that most people are more likely to share a message than to check the veracity. They would even dare you to check on the net.

The third group are the pseudo religious broadcasts. You are asked to share a particular message in order to receive some favour. The designers even go further to give examples of people who sent the message and secure contracts or suddenly become millionaires. On the other hand, they give examples of some imaginary characters who met with misfortune because they refused to share! Did Dangote also share this type of message? Maybe that is the secret of Bill Gates’ wealth!

Among the pseudo-religious broadcasts are those designed to create discord among adherents of various religious groups. One of such was sent to me with the instruction to send to all my contacts! It claimed Christians are being killed in one part of India. A check on Google showed that there was no such killing. More importantly, the place mentioned does not even exist! Another is a message alerting Muslims to the plan by Denmark to burn the Qur’an “next Saturday”. The message has been circulating for years. Yet it is always “next Saturday”. You are asked to send to all your Muslim contacts so that they can boycott products made in Denmark! Hmmm! When will it be “next Saturday”? Is Denmark a person?

There are also the downrightly mischievous ones designed to poke fun at us! Maybe you still remember that message instructing us to bath with salt water and drink a lot of salt to prevent Ebola. It was originated by some girls who were bored and wanted to catch some fun. They then decided to design that message. So many people believed and did as instructed. At the end of the day many high blood pressure patients were dispatched to the great beyond after the salt they took aggravated their health condition!

We also have a recent one asking us to send to five WhatsApp groups to claim a sum of N720,000. Just like that!

In fact there are websites dedicated to creating this type of message!

Whichever the category of WhatsApp hoax broadcast they all bank on our fear, greed, emotion and laziness.

Here are some tips to avoid falling victim.

Beware of long health warnings. They often pack a lot of lies in the middle after starting with facts,

Hesitate before sharing messages. Maybe if you read a second time you would discover some lies in the message. This is why they often end with instruction to share now.

Always check on Google. Many of these hoax messages have been circulating for years and they have been documented as hoax. Just type the key words into your browser. E.g. Paracetamol Machupo virus hoax.

It is not true if it stands too good to be true! Ignore messages asking you to inform physically challenged persons that there is a scheme paying them N100,000 per month! Or a message instructing you to send name of your over 70 for free Hajj!

Ask questions. Don’t just share. Ask “Why is this person asking me to share with all my contacts?” What do they stand to gain?

We should endeavour to know a little about everything. For instance, if we know that HIV cannot be transmitted through food, we would ignore messages claiming some people got infected with HIV when they eat banana or water melon.

Try clicking on the links or call the phone numbers. This writer has made a number of breakthroughs by clicking on the link and indicated. On many occasions, the link refers to a different unrelated matter entirely.

When I called the phone number used to advertise a particular job offer, the person at the other end told me he had nothing to do with the said job. He lamented that he had almost developed a phobia for his phone as a result of the number of people contacting him for a job he knows nothing about.
Resist the urge to be the first to break a particular piece of news even when we aren’t sure it is true.

Be more scientific minded and less superstitious. A more scientifically minded person wouldn’t help send messages claiming some people died after receiving calls from a particular phone number

Some widely circulated WhatsApp hoax messages

Share this message with 20 contacts and your WhatsApp logo would turn blue! Even if you send to 1 million contacts, it would remain green.

Share this picture and some organisation would donate to treatment of a sick child. Bloody waste of time. Nobody is monitoring how many times you send a particular message!

40 persons died after eating a particular biscuit in South Africa. Ok o! I wonder how 40 persons would die after consuming a product in South Africa and yet no newspaper reported it and the company has not been blacklisted!

Share this video until it reaches Buhari! Thanks so much. I don’t have Buhari on my contact list. Besides, the person in the video does not bear any resemblance to the person you claim to be reporting.

To be continued!
