A school gardener, Femi Aderonmu, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating a Senior Secondary School 3 pupil of the Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri, Rafiu Adagun, to death.

It was gathered that Rafiu was heading home after writing his West African Senior School Certificate Examination on Wednesday when he was accosted by the gardener along the Oke-Olu Road in the Iponri area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Aderonmu engaged the deceased in a fight, which led to the latter being unconscious. He was later rushed to hospital where he was confirmed dead.

In a post on Instagram, Rafiu’s sister, identified simply as Adebusola, accused the school of covering up the incident.

She added that the family got to know of exactly what happened through some pupils, who were eyewitnesses.

She said, “RIP to my lovely brother, who was beaten to death by the school’s gardener, who is 26 years older than him at the Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri.

“There was an attempt to cover up the incident by the school authority at first. They said he (Rafiu) suddenly slumped and died, but we made them understand that he was healthy and we said that we wouldn’t accept that excuse.

“We were only able to get the truth after asking some pupils, who were at the scene of the incident, and who confirmed to us that he was beaten to death by the gardener.”

However, in a statement on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the arrest of Aderonmu, adding that he would soon be charged to court after investigation.

Elkana stated, “On April 16, 2019, around 2.40pm, the Iponri Police Station received a complaint from the Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri, that on April 15, 2019, around 4.40pm, one Femi Aderonmu, a gardener with the said school, engaged one Rafiu Adagun, an SSS3 pupil, in a fight along Oke-Olu Road, Iponri.

“In the process, the pupil fell down and became unconscious and was rushed to the Smith Medical Hospital, where he later died. Eyewitness accounts showed that the deceased was returning home with his friends after writing the WASSCE and the suspect blocked him on the way and pulled him down on the accusation that the deceased had insulted him earlier.

“Homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, visited the crime scene and the corpse of the deceased was deposited in the mortuary for autopsy. The suspect has been arrested and will be charged to court for murder.

How love affair earned housewife, pastor lover death sentence

How love affair earned housewife, pastor lover death sentence

By Usman A. Bello, Benin |

A secret love affair with a pastor became open after the husband of the woman was found burnt in a car and they are now sentenced to death by hanging for murder.

When Mrs. Eniobong Isonguyo got entangled in a spicy love affair with Pastor Udoka Ukachukwu, she didn’t envisage it would earn her and her pastor a death sentence.

She was married to Engr. Victor Gabriel Isonguyo, a senior staff of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Benin, but defiled her matrimonial vows and allegedly engaged in extra-marital affairs which led to the death of her husband.

It was gathered that the incident occurred in 2013, when Engr. Gabriel discovered that his wife was pregnant while he was away and wanted to know how it came about.

It was learnt that the accusation resulted to acrimony between him and his wife, who planned with the pastor lover to kill Engr. Gabriel who they perceived as obstacle to their love affair.

It was gather that the deceased and his wife, then, have been married for 18 years with three children.

Chief Judge of Edo State Hon. Justice Esohe Frances Ikponmwen
Before his death, Engr. Gabriel was said to be having issues with his wife over the paternity of their children after he suspected the wife of having an extra-marital affair with the said pastor.

It was learnt that the deceased reported the issue to his family as well as his in-law that he was not responsible for the pregnancy. The families were said to have resolved that a DNA test be conducted after the wife gives birth. But he was murdered by his wife and her pastor lover before she delivered the baby.

The woman who was said to be four months pregnant as at the time of the murder later gave birth in prison.

The wife, it was gathered, reportedly went to the deceased’s office after his death to report that he was missing and thereafter went to the bank where she allegedly withdrew N4million from their joint account.

It was further gathered the police while parading the suspects said the woman had reported the alleged missing of her husband to the police.

Ironically, the reported missing man, was however, found burnt in his private vehicle along Sapele road, Benin, a day after the wife lodged the complaint of the alleged missing of her husband.

The police said investigation however revealed that the said woman gave out the husband’s official car, a Volkswagen Passant to a pastor from whom the vehicle was recovered from.

The pastor was said to have replaced the original vehicle registration plate number with a fake one. It was gathered that before the investigation, the woman denied any involvement in the killing.

According to the police, Eniobong said: “When I did not see my husband I ran to the Pastor because we have known for a very long time. I took my husband’s new car to him to sow as a seed in the church so that my husband will be found. I told him to take it to the church but I didn’t know that he went to change the plate number. I ask him to pray harder because I loved my husband and I don’t want anything to happen to him.”

It was gathered during investigation the police accosted a lady in the compound where the car was packed and she reportedly told the police that the car was brought by a pastor who lives in the compound.

When the police approached the pastor, he was said to have explained that one of his daughters in the church sowed a seed with the car.

He was said to have led the police to the residence of the said “daughter” but surprisingly it turned out it was the deceased’s wife.

The police then said the suspect confessed to the crime during investigation.

After years of investigation and litigation, High Court in Benin on Thursday sentenced the woman and her pastor lover to death for the murder of Engr. Isonguyo.

During the trial, the prosecuting counsel told the court that the murder was carried out by the convicts so as to cover up the pregnancy accusation by the deceased.

He explained that: “The deceased’s wife told the pastor to wait on the route of her husband to work and ask him for a ride. The plan paid off as the man eventually stopped and gave the pastor a ride along Sapele road, Benin. During the journey, the said pastor brought out a sharp object and hit him on his neck before opening the petrol tank, sipped out fuel and burnt him beyond recognition.”

In her ruling Justice Geraldine Imadegbelo held that the prosecution was able to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Eniobong and Pastor Ukachukwu to death by hanging.

Secondary school student stabs colleague to death in juju fight in Ekiti

Secondary school student stabs colleague to death in Ekiti

Sam Nwaoko – Ado Ekiti

ADO Grammar School in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital has become a ghost town following the stabbing to death of one of its students, Favour Matthew, in a fight with his colleague.
Mathew said to be 16 years old and in SS2, had died from the stab wound he received when he engaged Timilehin Kehinde, an SS3 student, in a fight in one far corner of school premises, after closing on Thursday.
Some of the workers in the school claimed that the two students had started with a by quarrel over the ownership of a football during school hours on Thursday, but had shifted what they described as “the main fight” to after school hours, later the same day and had used weapons and charms on themselves.
Witnesses also alleged while relaying the events, that the deceased Matthew had run home to arm himself, and had returned to school after school hours with axe and machete wrapped in red and white pieces of cloths, and a charmed ring with which to continue the fight.

The workers further alleged that Kehinde had welcomed the fight which had, by then, degenerated to a juju contest because he was allegedly stabbed without getting injured.
However, when Kehinde used the same weapon on Matthew, he slumped and later died at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado Ekiti.
The incident has led to the closure of the school by its authorities following alleged threats by the relations of the victim that they were coming to the school for a retaliatory attack, on Friday.
Meanwhile, the police have deployed men at the school’s main gate to forestall further breakdown of law and order, and to also nip any planned reprisal attack in the bud. The main gate of the school has also been locked, while armed policemen were also seen manning the back and other flanks of the school premises.
Teachers were seen standing in groups in the compound while the students who had earlier reported to school were sent back home.
The principal of the School, Mr Ebenezer Falayi and his Vice, Mr Olurotimi Olaoluwa, while speaking on the incident said they found that it had started at about 2.15pm at a far section of the school compound after the school had closed for the day.
Falayi said they had concluded the day’s closing assembly with the students and that they had been dispersed before noise from the troubled section of the school brought his attention to the development.
He said they found that the victim had been stabbed and teachers mobilised, went to the scene of the fight to ferry the injured Matthew to EKSUTH.
Falana said: “This incident really saddened us because it could have been avoided. What I gathered from students who were at the spot of the incident was that the duo had argued over who had superior power.
“The deceased had earlier gone home to bring all those weapons which I learnt could not pierce the suspect when they were used on him.
“I was told that Kehinde later overpowered Mathew and collected those weapons and stabbed the victim in the chest. Our teachers, including myself, my Vice and the Registrar alongside other teachers who were resident on campus here rushed him to EKSUTH. We even took the suspect along.
“The victim was put on life support, but that could not help the situation. He died in the hospital. I had to quickly call the DPO of the Odo Ado police station. He mobilised his men and contacted police station at Oke Ila to prevent the suspect from being killed by the highly enraged deceased’s family members.
“At the hospital, they insisted on carrying out the autopsy before releasing the corpse but the family resisted it. They later released the corpse to the family when it nearly caused trouble at the hospital.
“The police also took the suspect into custody. But I had to beg for security beef up around the school when there was a threat that 30 students will be killed in reprisal attack today (Friday).”
A police source at the Odo Ado police station said the suspect had been taken into custody at the Criminal Investigation Department of the state’s police command, saying that the intervention of the police doused the tension caused by the incident.
The police source said the student “cannot be more than 16 years of age and he didn’t even know that his colleague had died in the hospital, because he asked about his health when we took him into custody.”
The Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti Police Command, Mr Caleb Ikechukwu, when contacted, however, said he has not been officially briefed about the incident.
