Parents have been implored to join hands with teachers and school authority in curbing vices among students.
Addressing this year’s Ramadan lecture of Lagos State Education District I, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Barrister Margaret Titilayo Solarin, implored parents to pay attention to their children.
‘Nigeria and the world at large will be a better place if parents do their work and they don’t t leave it to the teacher alone. Leaving the teachers to be counsellors, parents, doctors. I am calling on you. Let us train our children in the way of the Lord’, she declared.
Solarin lamented the fact that some parents are even encouraging their children to get involved in internet scam, prostitution and robbery.
Delivering the lecture entitled Youths Impatience for Wealth: Islamic Solution the guest lecturer, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladoyin, a retired director and principal, attributed the youth quest for quick wealth to failure of today’s parents.
He observed that parents during his time drum the message of dignity of labour into their children. He said no child dared bring home even a common eraser that doesn’t belong to him. The situation today, he said is different as parents no longer ask questions.
The consequences of this quest to get rich quick without working include insanity and youth death.
He lamented that many students have abandoned schools to engage in scam and other get-rich quick measures.
Charging the students to embrace hard work and pay attention to their studies, he said Allah has made provision for everyone and He will pay back every one for all they have done.
The Ramadan lecture is an annual programme in the calendar of the District made up of Agege, Alimoso and Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government areas of Lagos State.
The programme featured quiz and Quran recitation competitions.
In the junior schools quiz category, Ipaja Junior College emerged first, while Eko Junior College, Agege and Station Junior Grammar School, Ifako came second and third respectively.
Abibat Mogaji Millennium Senior Secondary School, Agege came tops in the senior category ahead of Meiran Community Senior High School and Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior High School in second and third place respectively.
