Addressing journalists at a press conference in Kano yesterday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, said the command received a distress call at about 10 pm on Friday, following which the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lawal Abubakar, dispatched a team to the scene.
The 22-year-old victim was said to be Chu’s lover until she was murdered on Friday.
Haruna said: “The 47- year-old Chinese visited the residence of his girlfriend, Miss Ummukulthum Sani (22) and they engaged in an argument before he allegedly stabbed her many times with a knife.”
He explained that when the police team reached the scene of the incident, they rushed the victim to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in the city, where she was confirmed dead.
Haruna also confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying that an in-depth investigation into the case had begun on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
Narrating the incidence to newsmen yesterday, Ummukulthum’s bereaved mother confirmed that her daughter was in relationship with the suspect before she got married about three years ago but the marriage failed after three months, which made the Chinese to stalk their house even though her daughter never paid attention to Chu.
“But on that fateful Friday evening, the sound of his knock on the gate was too disturbing and I decided to open it. He pushed me and gained entry into her room. He stabbed her multiple times with a knife in spite of my efforts to rescue her
“My cry for help was also not noticeable due to heavy rain.”
Ummukulthum’s mother said it was a passerby who overheard the screaming in her daughter’s room that gained entry into the room through the window and got hold of Chu.
She said the deceased was rushed to the hospital by the people that came to rescue her but she was eventually confirmed dead.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Ummukulthum was a youth corps member serving in Sokoto State before her death.
It was gathered that she was in a relationship with the suspect when she met her ex-hubby and he (suspect) supported the marriage.
It was also learnt that when he heard of her divorce, he returned to her and she reportedly refused to accept him back.
‘How my daughter met killer lover’
Speaking on the death of Ummukulthum, an alumnus of Kano State School of Nursing and Midwifery, after her burial according to Islamic rites at about 10 am yesterday, her bereaved mother said: “She was my daughter. He (the Chinese man) was always coming around wanting to see her and she had been refusing.
“This time around, he kept knocking on the door. When I was fed up with him hitting the door loudly, I opened the door and he pushed me aside and got in and started stabbing her with a knife.
“I started shouting and people came running in. We rushed her to the hospital but before we got there, she was dead.
“It happened around 9.30 pm. We were at home with her two younger sisters when it happened. Her brother was out and her father is dead. It was raining then, people were indoors and couldn’t hear me shouting until someone came and tried going in through the window.
“I want the authorities to see to this criminal act. It was long since their love affair ended. She got married and later got divorced. That was when he came back to her life, pressing that he must see her.
“He used to come in, although we don’t like it but he doesn’t understand. We used to chase him out. When I attempted informing the police, my children would refuse and say let’s not make the matter public.
“The man that came to her aid and went in through the window was the one who caught him and brought him out. He ran off and they chased him and brought him back. He is now with the police.
“She (Ummukulthum) was my eldest daughter but she has two elder brothers. He understood that she didn’t want to see him. When he called, she would not pick it. That was when he decided to invade.
“He knocked on the door for almost an hour. She was the one who asked me to go and send him away after which he pushed me away upon opening the gate. He went straight into her room.
“He knows where the room is because he used to come in. In most cases, it was her brother that used to send him away.
“They first met at Shoprite when she went to buy perfume and they exchanged phone numbers. That was how they started making out on calls.
“When she got married, they separated until she was divorced. Her husband suspected that they were chatting on phone, although that was not what led to the failure of her marriage.
“Of course, she told him that she was going to marry him, but because her paternal uncles saw issues coming, they refused and I agreed with them.”
Video of victim predicting her death goes viral
An emotional video of the victim predicting her end is currently circulating on the social media.
In the clip, Ummita, as she was fondly called, is visibly elated as she chats with an unidentified female friend in a room.
Teased by the friend she called Saurauniyya, she said: “Sarauniya, I may die before you. Everyone has own destiny and it comes unannounced. I may sleep today and never wake up (die).
“May we die with faith and you cannot die and leave me until you give birth to twenty children.
Responding, Saurauniya said: “I will die before you; no, I will die before. You will not die until you give birth to fifty children, hhhhhh.”
The duo got lost in laughter.
