Shun Drugs Abuse, Education District 1 Charges Students

Shun Drugs Abuse, Education District 1 Charges Students

Students have been admonished to shun drug abuse in order to avoid fallen prey to social problems and the wrath of God.

This admonition was given during the Ramadan Lecture of Lagos State Education District 1 held at Government College, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State.

The Guest Lecturer, Alhaji Umar Animasahun, said Allah forbids the use of harmful drugs and intoxicants as they are work of Satan to create enmity and hatred among people.
He also said drug abuse lead to anti-social behaviour and mental sickness.

‘Drugs can be taken to cure sickness. In that case it should follow the prescription of qualified doctor or certified Muslim herbal practitioner who does not worship idols

‘The Prophet (SAWS) said: if you are sick, take medicine. There is no disease without medication. But self medication is not encouraged. Taking overdose is not encouraged. Drugs taken for healing purpose is allowed’, Animasaun said.

The Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Dr Olufolayimika Ayandele, charged the students to justify government investment on them by facing their studies so that they can maintain the good education standard the District is known for.

The event also featured Quran recitation competition among schools in the three local government areas of Agege, Alimoso and Ifako Ijaye which make up the district.

Abubakar Usain from Agege Junior College came first ahead of Iliyas Suwata of Lagos Baptist Senior College and Lawal Nabifa from Abibatu Mogaji Milennium High School who came second and third respectively

Woman sits final year exams in hospital 30 minutes after giving birth

Woman sits final year exams in hospital 30 minutes after giving birth

By Samson Berhane and Bukola Adebayo, CNN

Addis Ababa (CNN) — A woman in Ethiopia took her final year exams in hospital just 30 minutes after giving birth to a baby boy.
Almaz Derese, 21, went into labor overnight Monday and delivered her baby on the day her secondary school exams were due to start.
Derese told CNN she did not want to wait another year to sit the exams.

“Although it was very hard to take an exam after giving birth, I did not want to waste the opportunity that I tirelessly worked for a decade,” she said.
Derese, who lives in the Illu Aba Bora district, in Ethiopia’s southwest, sat for papers in English, Maths and Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language.
Kebede Negesu, the district’s education head, told CNN they assigned an examiner to monitor her while she wrote the exams at the hospital.
“Her husband told us [Almaz] was unable to sit for the exam in a classroom, and we asked her whether she would be able to take the exam or not. She said ‘yes,'” Negesu said.

Almaz got married at the age of 17, but says her husband always encouraged her to continue her education.
“My husband was so supportive, and he always encouraged me to be strong in my education. When I say that I must take the exam right after giving birth, he did not hesitate to help me,” she said.
Almaz returned to the exam center on Tuesday to take more tests.

It is not unusual for pregnant girls to continue their education in secondary schools in Ethiopia, where more than 40 percent of young girls are married before the age of 18.
According to a 2018 UNICEF report, the country is home to 15 million child brides, and more than a third of them were married before they were 15 years.
More than 11 students, who gave birth since the start of the National Examinations on Monday have also sat for their tests, a spokeswoman for Ethiopia’s education ministry told CNN.

“We have seen more students giving birth. The number has more than tripled since last year,” Haregua Mamo said.
About 1.2 million students are taking the national examination, of which half are women, according to Haregua.

Gorilla ‘swallowed’ N6.8 million’, says Kano zoo accounts officer

Gorilla ‘swallowed’ N6.8 million’, says Kano zoo accounts officer

by Our Reporter

A gorilla at the Kano Zoological Gardens is being accused of ‘swallowing‘ N6.8 million cash realized from gate takings during last week’s Eid el Fitri.

The police are already investigating the matter and are questioning 10 people.

An accounts officer at the zoo claimed that the gorilla sneaked into an office where the money was kept and then proceeded to ‘swallow’ it.

The Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Umar Kashekobo, confirmed that money was missing.

He gave no details.

He merely said: “Police are investigating what happened – all I can say is money is missing.”

The police also confirmed the disappearance of money from the zoo.

“Yes, it is true that money from five days of Sallah festivities is missing from the Kano zoo,” spokesman for the state police command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, told the BBC.

“As at now, we have arrested 10 members of staff of the zoo including the security man and those working in the finance unit.”

Kano-based Freedom Radio had, earlier in the week, interviewed someone from the zoo’s finance department who said a gorilla sneaked into the office, stole the money and then swallowed it.

The money swallowing gorilla story is similar to the allegation, last year, by an official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Benue state that a ‘spiritual’ snake found its way into the organization’s office in Makurdi and ate N36million cash.

Man rapes mother in Imo, blames alcohol

Man rapes mother in Imo, blames alcohol

Gibson Achonu, Owerri

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Imo State Command, has arrested one Paul Ihuaku for allegedly raping his mother.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 45-year-old Ihuaku hails from Umueke Ezagbogu in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.

Briefing journalists on Thursday, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Raji Ibrahim, said the suspect was arrested by the operatives of the corps following a tip-off.

It was gathered that after the incident, the mother reported the suspect to the youth in the area, who apprehended him and alerted men of the corps.

“The men of the command later proceeded to the residence of the suspect and arrested him,” he added.

Fielding questions from journalists, the suspect confessed to the crime, adding that he was under the influence of alcohol.

“After drinking on that fateful evening, there was a heavy downpour and I could not resist the urge for sex; so, I had to use a local pistol to threaten my mother to submission and I later raped her,” Ihuaku stated.

Asked if he was married, the suspect said he did not have the means yet, as he was not doing anything tangible.

“I was not bewitched. I was under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

It was also gathered that the incident took place in the village house the suspect is living in with his mother.

The mother (name withheld) confessed that the incident was the second time.

She said, “I was in the kitchen and saw him (Ihuaku) with a pistol. He used it to threaten me. He told me that he would kill me. I could not do anything other than to beg him to drop the gun.

“It was in the process that he threw me on the ground and it (rape) happened.

“I had to call on the youth the next morning, as the incident happened when it was already dark and damp. The youth later went to the NSCDC headquarters in Itu to report him, hence his arrest.”

Senate presidency: Five reasons why Lawan defeated Ndume

Senate presidency: Five reasons why Lawan defeated Ndume

by Praise Olowe

Senator Ahmed Lawan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday emerged President of the 9th Senate.

Lawan defeated Senator Ali Ndume with total votes of 79 to 28. Here is a look at five reasons why Lawan defeated Ndume:

· APC’s endorsement

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC met with governors and members of the National Assembly elected on the platform of the party on Monday in Abuja to endorse candidates for positions of the Senate President, Speaker and their deputies.

The forum endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan as Senate President. It is safe to say that the endorsement of Lawan could have influenced his victory.

Unlike 2015, the endorsement worked because the party didn’t stop at that. It mobilised all forces to make sure the endorsement worked.

· Buhari’s intervention

On Thursday 6th June, President Muhammadu Buhari met with Senators Danjuma Goje and Ahmed Lawan. After the closed-door meeting with the President, Goje withdrew from the race making, the road clearer for Lawan’s victory.

As against 2015, the President took the bull by the horn, ensuring he neutralised almost all the oppositions, cementing his status as a father figure in the party.

· Wide consultation

The same Lawan was endorsed in 2015 by APC but didn’t do much. He, more or less, trusted the party to ensure his victory. But this time around, he didn’t bank on the endorsement alone. He went round the nation, speaking to stakeholders and lobbying senators to support him.

He was able to rally round key forces to make his ambition a reality.

· Disaffections with Ndume

Most People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senators, somehow couldn’t trust Ndume with their votes. The 28 votes he garnered clearly indicate all PDP members didn’t vote for him despite his endorsement by the NWC of the party.

Ndume, to many of them, is never a good alternative to Lawan. He was in the PDP some years ago and they believe he may just be a sell-out.

· PDP’s late moves

PDP endorsed Senator Alli Ndume late. It was only on Tuesday’s morning, few hours to the election, that the party made its preference for the senate presidency public. To many of the senators, it was one move too late. If they had probably endorsed him earlier, he would have probably won.

Government Cancels Mid Term Break For Public Schools

Oyo Govt Cancels Mid Term Break For Public School

By Wale Akinselure

The Oyo State government has announced the cancellation of Thursday and Friday mid-term break for public primary and secondary schools in the state.

The state government hinged this decision on the fact that students of public schools in the state had stayed out of their classrooms for several days as a result of recent industrial actions and public holidays.

This announcement was contained in a circular with reference number, Edu1070/Col.VI/27, dated June 11, 2018, signed by the acting permanent secretary, state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr Idowu Adeosun.

Adeosun, in a conversation with Nigerian Tribune, however, pointed out that the directive did not affect private schools in the state.

Teachers and heads of schools were consequently to utilize the two days to make up for lost grounds in their lesson plan for the third term of the ongoing 2018/2019 session.

It would be recalled that the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) had on June 3 suspended a two weeks old strike while the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had also suspended a 24 hours long strike on May 27, 2019.

“I am to inform you that in view of the number of days the students of public primary and secondary schools have stayed out of classrooms for the reasons of public holidays and strike actions, the mid-term break for the third term of 2018/2019 academic session is hereby cancelled,” the circular read.
