Teachers have been advised to regularly monitor their health in order to avoid risk of stress and high blood pressure.
This piece of advice was given by a retired nurse with the Lagos State government, Alhaja Abiodun Adigun-King while giving a health talk at the Ramadan lecture of the Alimoso Zone of the Muslim Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (MUTAN) in Lagos.
According to her, regular check-up is necessary to prevent most health conditions.
Speaking on stress, she identified some of the causes to include overworking, increased financial obligation, moving to a new house, getting married, taking care of the elderly or sick persons and over talking.
She also identified some signs of stress to include headache, high blood pressure, rapid breathing, stomach upset and chest pain.
Discussing methods of coping with stress, she implored the audience to shun unhealthy methods such as drinking, smoking, gluttony and transfer of aggression which could even have greater health implication.
She therefore recommended healthy ways of coping with stress such as moving on with life, seeking alternatives to stressful situations, engaging in social activities, avoiding people or situations that cause stress as well as keeping away from unnecessary stressors.
Adigun also counselled teachers to always take a break between their long lessons and observing their blood pressures.
She also charged teachers not to treat headache as ordinary as it may be a symptom of a more serious ailment such as hypertension. Instead, she counselled that they should embrace regular check-up and consult hospitals.
Addressing students who were present at the lecture, she warned them against drug abuse which may lead to serious physical and mental complications.
